RIM has yet to let developers create themes for BlackBerry 7 devices but that has not stopped Magmic. We told you they had some success getting themes on BlackBerry 7 devices and now we have the fruit of their labor. They have released a Deck the Halls holiday theme for BlackBerrys with support for the latest BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930. It also supports BlackBerry 6 devices and will hopefully support other BlackBerry 7 devices in the future.

Here is how Magmic/Bplay describes the theme:

Don let me know about this latest theme put out by dlodlnodllly for BlackBerry at Communicasia2011. The theme is pretty slick and comes with a built in screenshot utility with the ability to post to Facebook and Twitter. The theme is pretty slick though I have to say now I am checking out their whole lineup.

I’ve been testing out this custom case from iFrogz for a couple of weeks now and the more I use it, the more I like it. I am all about keeping cases as thin and minimalistic as possible. This Luxe case does a great job of this. It is made from injection molded, super-durable polycarbonate. The iFrogz website describes this case as having a “metallic finish and plush feel.” It is really tough to describe the feel of the case, but I love it. Its tough, but super soft to the touch. Pretty cool polycarbonate!

The first thing I love about this case is the huge range of color choice options. You can mix and match top and bottom pieces of the case from the iFrogz website and find the color combo/match that suits your personality best. I went with the pure white top and gun metal bottom. Its tough to see in the top photo, but the black portion inside the case is a soft, fuzzy layer to pamper the backside of your berry.

The 2 pieces of the case slide on snugly from the top and bottom until the top ring slides over the bottom circle to lock it into place. It is quite secure, almost to the point of being tough to get off. This could be seen as a pro or con. Its great to not have to worry about having the case coming apart in my pocket, but a little cumbersome when trying to do a quick battery pull. The best method I’ve found to take it apart is lift the bottom edge of the ring while pulling the 2 pieces apart. I’m all about efficiency, but this is definitely not a deal breaker for me. I’d rather have it more secure than worry about it falling apart.

The cutouts on the back match very nicely with the camera and flash. I’m pretty sure the middle cutout is for the external speaker.

The front shows off the slim profile of the Luxe case.

There are 2 cutouts on each side of the case and 2 more on top for the lock and mute keys.

Overall this is an excellent case. After giving it a fair shot, it has definitely grown on me. The custom colors are cool, the soft feel is seriously awesome, and it fits just right.

De-Lexion is slick  new theme, that offers true reflections on your homescreen.  I have seen many other themes that use fake reflections, and once you put up custom icons, the reflection is gone.  Walker Themes has used a custom SVG code to have the reflections show true, no matter what icon you put in to place.  I have been running the theme for a few days, and it is fast and clean.  De-Lexion also has a hide able weather slot and hidden today.

Walker Themes are new to the theme building scene, but their talent is definitely showing, this theme has great functionality.  They have also used a totally custom set of icons that that really cleans the theme up in the app menu.  There are 6 customizable icons along the bottom, and now matter which icon you put there, the reflection shows. De-Lexion comes in three colors, Blue, Green, and Pink.  The notification area is clean with no cut offs, and custom signal/battery meters as well. Space activates the hidden today, and esc hides it bringing the weather slot (or profile) icon back.

There is nothing really mind blowing in this update but it looks like RIM is finally trying to penetrate the Chinese market. They have just launched the BlackBerry Curve 8980 on China Mobile. This device is an update to the BlackBerry Curve 8910 they launched earlier but adds Wi-Fi. Other than that it is the same device which you can check out on the BlackBerry China page.

RIM is also working on a BlackBerry 9788 for the Chinese market that will finally bring 3G to Chinese BlackBerrys. China has their own TD-SCDMA network so this new 9788 had to be reworked to run on that network. Other than that it will be almost exactly the same as current 9780’s with the OS 6.0 love and 512MB of RAM.

For some ridiculous reason RIM decide to restrict the availability of the three free holiday themes they released. At first they were only available to users in the US and Canada but now they have expanded them to more countries. (Thx iBenRowe) The crazy part is that each theme has a different list of countries where it is available. It makes me wonder what the hell is going through RIM’s head when they do these kinds of things…

It has been years since the last time I have heard of RIM releasing a free theme. They used to do it regularly on mobile.blackberry.com but with the advent of App World it has really dried up. While perusing App World I discovered that RIM has quietly released three free themes for the holidays. The only catch is that they seem to be limited to only US and Canada and seem to work with most OS 4.5+ devices except for the 88XX series and the new Pearl 91XX and Curve 93XX. Not sure why RIM would do that but I guess you cannot complain about free:

Just when I thought I wasn’t expecting it, a totally hot and slick Torch theme comes along. Well this one isn’t just for the Torch, is actually available for most recent BlackBerry devices. It’s been a bit since we’ve seen a theme from the Ninja but this latest series release, HexSuite is pretty slick if you ask me. Available in 5 colors; silver/grey, neon green, rich red, vibrant magenta and luminous blue you don’t even have to choose which color you want because when you buy 1, you automatically get the other 4 colored themes FREE. It’s been a little quiet for theme submissions lately but then poof, they all come in at once. The latest design to come out of Hedone Design is called Sphere. Take note, this is a very simple, grey/black colored theme but with luminous (almost glowing) blue accents. I wouldn’t say I fell head over heels for this theme but I was impressed with the smooth icon dock scrolling feature on the home screen…very slick. The side signal meter tab was confusing at first, but I eventually got the idea. That said, the theme worked really well on my 9700 and didn’t lag one bit. I would suggest heading over to Hedone Design‘s site to check out the screen shots provided so you can get a better idea of how the theme looks on various devices…which Sphere is available for at a $6.99 price point.

I can’t keep up with Hedone Design and all the themes they’ve been pumping out lately but their latest, B3 did catch my eye. A very business like theme (which it was meant to be) with soft grey colors and OS 6 icons B3 offers a center Today screen for calendar, messages and missed calls and a right side sliding dock. When I first went to download the theme it was a whopping 2.5 mb but take note, there are 2 themes in this one package…B3 Pro and B3 Lite. I believe the difference is in the amount of icons on the dock to the right. That said, B3 ran efficiently for me and looked nice overall. This latest theme release, ICONIC, from BerryMobi is pretty wild to say the least. I love the muted blue colors and luminous OS 6.0 icons. This is a no-nonsense theme for sure but it doesn’t lack in elegance and style. As the screen shot above indicates, there’s a lot of icons on the home screen (for those of you who prefer that). NOTE: These hybrids are meant only for advanced users since you really can screw up your device if you install them wrong and you wont get any support from RIM. Proceed at your own risk!

Driphter has gone and publicly released their latest OS 6.0 based hybrids for the BlackBerry 85xx, 8900, 9000, and 9700. This is their second release with even more OS 6.0 files included. I installed it on my 9700 and am loving it. Others are reporting that it has a good radio and browser build in it. Keep in mind these builds are meant to be installed on top of the base OS so you will need to follow the instructions to the letter!

You can find the download files and instructions for your device in the Driphter forums for now until they put up a main post for it. Alternatively you can find them on the download page. Just select your device and instructions are in the hybrid forums.

This new 8910 uses the new Evolved-EDGE technology which makes EDGE a little faster but it does not have Wi-Fi like the 8900. It comes with OS 5.0 and all the rest of the 8910 features but it really makes me wonder what they are thinking… Maybe they want to hit the low end market?

I am just in awe of all the girly themes coming out of the Ninja these days…hot, hot, hot! Their latest, FafiGirl is a mix of pinks & purples, customized wallpapers and funky little fonts. I’m using it now on my 9700 and it works flawlessly, though I expect nothing less from Ninja Themes. I don’t have any giveaways on this one but FafiGirl, available for the 8900, 9600 & 9700 (OS’s 4.6 – 5.0) is on sale for only $2.49 until May 14th. A great deal for a theme of this quality.

He’s baaaaaaaack! Ninja Themes, one of THE masters of theme making, is back in action with his latest whammy of a theme…UltiMatte Nano. Yes people, this theme is dark, slick and oh so handsome. I tested the 9700 version and not only are the graphics of extreme quality but I am loving the matte icons, a few of which are nicely customized. There is a bottom dock of 7 customizable icons and a slot for your weather app in the top left hand corner. The truly neat feature is that even when you lock the screen, the weather app still displays…and updates (except on the 9000). I know you weather fans out there are gonna love that. There’s lots of other goodies on this theme but I’ll let the description at the following store link do the talking. UltiMatte Nano is only $1.99 available for the 8900, 9000, 9600 & 9700 at the Mobihand Store. My friend Brian from Theme Addiction, who I think is one of our premier theme designers, recently let me know about his latest brainchild Heroism. Yes, it’s another HTC Hero inspired theme, yet I tell you…this one definitely screams unique. I love the slide up menu bars and the whole arrangement of the theme. Heroism  “includes a weather slot, 6 customized icons, 6 Media switch access, Calendar & Message access to view from the home screen. To make “Messages” show up on the home screen just press “$” and “Calendar” will change to “Messages“. There are two versions of this theme available; one with a weather slot and one without. Kreep, the latest theme to be released by Calx Design is a bit of a turn for the theme developer. Using a color scheme of bright yellow/orange’ish colors and icons, that I will say, are very cool Kreep has a sort of industrial futuristic feel to it. I’m not sure I like the busy background image to be honest, and I probably would have liked the theme more with something simpler, but to each his/her own. The 9700 version I tested worked well enough although the time/date/message indicator/battery meter, etc. box on the top left hand corner of the home screen was a little small. Other than that, it ran pretty smoothly.

“Kreep” is the first in a series of themes inspired by the old WipeOut school of design. This theme is different from other Calx themes in that it uses simple 2D outlined icons and leaves the 3D for the homescreen.
