RIM has yet to let developers create themes for BlackBerry 7 devices but that has not stopped Magmic. We told you they had some success getting themes on BlackBerry 7 devices and now we have the fruit of their labor. They have released a Deck the Halls holiday theme for BlackBerrys with support for the latest BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930. It also supports BlackBerry 6 devices and will hopefully support other BlackBerry 7 devices in the future.

Here is how Magmic/Bplay describes the theme:

I have been keeping an eye out on Virgin Mobile since they started offering prepaid BlackBerrys and prepaid broadband cards. Ashley let me know about Virgin Mobiles announcement that select OfficeMax stores nationwide will be carrying the BlackBerry Curve 8530 along with the MiFi 2200 mobile hotspot and Ovation MC760 USB modem.

I always thought it was a shame that Virgin Mobile is only offering the older BlackBerry Curve 8530 but that is probably to keep costs  down to $129.99 though it is missing the WebKit browser. Still they have a very sweet BlackBerry Beyond Talk Plan starting at $35/month with unlimited SMS, email, data, and web along with 300 minutes. Their Broadband2Go prepaid plans are also decent with:

• $10/ 100 MB (10 day expiration)
• $20/month 500 MB
• $50/month Unlimited Data (3G speeds up to 2.5GB)

Let us know if you have one of these devices. I have a friend who keeps one as a BlackBerry device when he travels to the US. I am curious what others use them for.

Don let me know about this latest theme put out by dlodlnodllly for BlackBerry at Communicasia2011. The theme is pretty slick and comes with a built in screenshot utility with the ability to post to Facebook and Twitter. The theme is pretty slick though I have to say now I am checking out their whole lineup.

I’ve been testing out this custom case from iFrogz for a couple of weeks now and the more I use it, the more I like it. I am all about keeping cases as thin and minimalistic as possible. This Luxe case does a great job of this. It is made from injection molded, super-durable polycarbonate. The iFrogz website describes this case as having a “metallic finish and plush feel.” It is really tough to describe the feel of the case, but I love it. Its tough, but super soft to the touch. Pretty cool polycarbonate!

The first thing I love about this case is the huge range of color choice options. You can mix and match top and bottom pieces of the case from the iFrogz website and find the color combo/match that suits your personality best. I went with the pure white top and gun metal bottom. Its tough to see in the top photo, but the black portion inside the case is a soft, fuzzy layer to pamper the backside of your berry.

The 2 pieces of the case slide on snugly from the top and bottom until the top ring slides over the bottom circle to lock it into place. It is quite secure, almost to the point of being tough to get off. This could be seen as a pro or con. Its great to not have to worry about having the case coming apart in my pocket, but a little cumbersome when trying to do a quick battery pull. The best method I’ve found to take it apart is lift the bottom edge of the ring while pulling the 2 pieces apart. I’m all about efficiency, but this is definitely not a deal breaker for me. I’d rather have it more secure than worry about it falling apart.

The cutouts on the back match very nicely with the camera and flash. I’m pretty sure the middle cutout is for the external speaker.

The front shows off the slim profile of the Luxe case.

There are 2 cutouts on each side of the case and 2 more on top for the lock and mute keys.

Overall this is an excellent case. After giving it a fair shot, it has definitely grown on me. The custom colors are cool, the soft feel is seriously awesome, and it fits just right.

De-Lexion is slick  new theme, that offers true reflections on your homescreen.  I have seen many other themes that use fake reflections, and once you put up custom icons, the reflection is gone.  Walker Themes has used a custom SVG code to have the reflections show true, no matter what icon you put in to place.  I have been running the theme for a few days, and it is fast and clean.  De-Lexion also has a hide able weather slot and hidden today.

Walker Themes are new to the theme building scene, but their talent is definitely showing, this theme has great functionality.  They have also used a totally custom set of icons that that really cleans the theme up in the app menu.  There are 6 customizable icons along the bottom, and now matter which icon you put there, the reflection shows. De-Lexion comes in three colors, Blue, Green, and Pink.  The notification area is clean with no cut offs, and custom signal/battery meters as well. Space activates the hidden today, and esc hides it bringing the weather slot (or profile) icon back.

Usually when we announce carrier contests they are sadly only for the US. This time I am happy to point out that Rogers is giving away a free BlackBerry Curve 8520 every day until March 15th. This is open to residents of Canada who are 15 years or older and are not residents of Quebec (why?).’

At first they were only available to users in the US and Canada but now they have expanded them to more countries. (Thx iBenRowe) The crazy part is that each theme has a different list of countries where it is available. It has been years since the last time I have heard of RIM releasing a free theme. They used to do it regularly on mobile.blackberry.com but with the advent of App World it has really dried up. While perusing App World I discovered that RIM has quietly released three free themes for the holidays. The only catch is that they seem to be limited to only US and Canada and seem to work with most OS 4.5+ devices except for the 88XX series and the new Pearl 91XX and Curve 93XX. Not sure why RIM would do that but I guess you cannot complain about free:

• BlackBerry Exclusive Holiday Theme – Happy Holidays Red

None of the themes have any reviews since they just quietly launched today. They are relatively small at about 500Kb and in the description they recommend you sign up at this link for more information in the future. Check out the full description below:

The first thought I had when I read this price cut was that $199.99 is quite a bit to pay for a low-end last-gen BlackBerry Curve 8530. On the other hand the big pull for Boost Mobile is that this device is prepaid and contract free meaning that you can get in on the great $60+ all in one plans from Boost without signing any of those pesky 2 year contracts.

Sprint made the announcement that the Boost brand is now carrying the BlackBerry Curve 8530 for $199.99 (instead of the previous $249.99) from now on. If you were in the market for a prepaid device check it out at this link on the Boost Mobile website. via Engadget

I am not sure what made Verizon release these updates but it could be they just had them in the pipeline. Hopefully they will be rolling out BlackBerry 6 for the Bold 9650 and Curve 9330 soon… Though rumors still peg it for early 2011.

You can pick up the updates at this link. If Verizon is not your carrier just use the phone number 111-111-1111 to download. If you want to do the update OTA they are available and even seem to work for some BES users which is news to me.

What is truly impressive is that to date OtterBox has donated $45,637. Doing some simple math on the back of my napkin that translates into almost half a million dollars worth of sales  on over thirteen thousand cases for the “Strength” line.

On the other hand it could just be that the person who created the slide was lazy or just not thinking about it… On the other hand wouldn’t it be awesome if older devices received even a slimmed down version of BlackBerry 6? I know many users who would die for the WebKit browser.

Mac over @PocketBerry has heard that several T-Mobile stores are out of BlackBerry Curve 8520’s and are not replenishing them since T-Mobile is no longer sending any more out. The only real sad thing about this update is that it is looking highly doubtful that the BlackBerry Curve 9300 will be getting BlackBerry 6 which is really going to fragment the market. If RIM’s entry level Curve and Pearl devices both don’t get some version of BlackBerry 6 users are not going to be happy… On the other hand RIM might be doing this on purpose to limit BlackBerry 6 to the Storm and Bold lines.

I am not sure where they first came from but the first tip we got for it from Prakash sourced it from BBIndia.net. Maybe these updates are heading to a Indian carrier soon.

NOTE: These hybrids are meant only for advanced users since you really can screw up your device if you install them wrong and you wont get any support from RIM. Proceed at your own risk!

Driphter has gone and publicly released their latest OS 6.0 based hybrids for the BlackBerry 85xx, 8900, 9000, and 9700. This is their second release with even more OS 6.0 files included. I installed it on my 9700 and am loving it. Others are reporting that it has a good radio and browser build in it. Keep in mind these builds are meant to be installed on top of the base OS so you will need to follow the instructions to the letter!

You can find the download files and instructions for your device in the Driphter forums for now until they put up a main post for it. Alternatively you can find them on the download page. Just select your device and instructions are in the hybrid forums.

The problem stems from the fact that the 9300 & 8500 series devices look VERY similar from the back especially with the cover off. I was surprised when I took at good look at it to realize that they look almost identical from the back. Guess which is which below:

Along with this new color they are also introducing the BlackBerry Curve 8520 in Fuchsia Red for $49.99 with a 2 year contract and you can pick one up now at this link. Personally I wish the red color was more crimson… like the 8310 color.
