I’ve been testing out this custom case from iFrogz for a couple of weeks now and the more I use it, the more I like it. I am all about keeping cases as thin and minimalistic as possible. This Luxe case does a great job of this. It is made from injection molded, super-durable polycarbonate. The iFrogz website describes this case as having a “metallic finish and plush feel.” It is really tough to describe the feel of the case, but I love it. Its tough, but super soft to the touch. Pretty cool polycarbonate!

The first thing I love about this case is the huge range of color choice options. You can mix and match top and bottom pieces of the case from the iFrogz website and find the color combo/match that suits your personality best. I went with the pure white top and gun metal bottom. Its tough to see in the top photo, but the black portion inside the case is a soft, fuzzy layer to pamper the backside of your berry.

The 2 pieces of the case slide on snugly from the top and bottom until the top ring slides over the bottom circle to lock it into place. It is quite secure, almost to the point of being tough to get off. This could be seen as a pro or con. Its great to not have to worry about having the case coming apart in my pocket, but a little cumbersome when trying to do a quick battery pull. The best method I’ve found to take it apart is lift the bottom edge of the ring while pulling the 2 pieces apart. I’m all about efficiency, but this is definitely not a deal breaker for me. I’d rather have it more secure than worry about it falling apart.

The cutouts on the back match very nicely with the camera and flash. I’m pretty sure the middle cutout is for the external speaker.

The front shows off the slim profile of the Luxe case.

There are 2 cutouts on each side of the case and 2 more on top for the lock and mute keys.

Overall this is an excellent case. After giving it a fair shot, it has definitely grown on me. The custom colors are cool, the soft feel is seriously awesome, and it fits just right.

For some ridiculous reason RIM decide to restrict the availability of the three free holiday themes they released. At first they were only available to users in the US and Canada but now they have expanded them to more countries. (Thx iBenRowe) The crazy part is that each theme has a different list of countries where it is available. It makes me wonder what the hell is going through RIM’s head when they do these kinds of things…

It has been years since the last time I have heard of RIM releasing a free theme. They used to do it regularly on mobile.blackberry.com but with the advent of App World it has really dried up. While perusing App World I discovered that RIM has quietly released three free themes for the holidays. The only catch is that they seem to be limited to only US and Canada and seem to work with most OS 4.5+ devices except for the 88XX series and the new Pearl 91XX and Curve 93XX. Not sure why RIM would do that but I guess you cannot complain about free:

I can’t keep up with Hedone Design and all the themes they’ve been pumping out lately but their latest, B3 did catch my eye. A very business like theme (which it was meant to be) with soft grey colors and OS 6 icons B3 offers a center Today screen for calendar, messages and missed calls and a right side sliding dock. When I first went to download the theme it was a whopping 2.5 mb but take note, there are 2 themes in this one package…B3 Pro and B3 Lite. I believe the difference is in the amount of icons on the dock to the right. That said, B3 ran efficiently for me and looked nice overall. Available for a variety of BlackBerry devices, you can purchase B3 (2 themes in 1) for $6.99 at Hedone Design.

A few days ago, Peter from Elecite sent me their latest theme to test called Shell. At first glance, you have some sharp, vibrant graphics and an interesting slide out icon dock (set-up, etc. varies between devices). There’s another neat little feature which I’ll let Peter explain in his own words; “With this one, you have the option to choose between the black, white, blue, and red theme skins on the fly with the skin selection button. On top of color choice, you also get app choice – 4 dedicated icons in a dock, as well as 9 more hidden icons that you can reach via the arrow button – all completely customizable and imitate the icons at the top of your application list. Shell [costs $6.99 and] is available for the BlackBerry 8350, 85xx, 8900, 9000, 95xx, and 96xx series.“

Now for my own thoughts on Shell which while certainly attractive and interesting with all its bells and whistles, I find it a little to much for my tastes. I also have never liked darker color backgrounds in my ‘messages’ application for example because for me, I just find it too confusing. I tend to like simple, but that’s just me. You have to decide for yourself and Elecite does offer more screen shots on their product page so I suggest taking a look there for details. (Note: Some Storm2 or Storm (OS 5.0) users may experience distorted/resized wallpaper while in landscape view. Unfortunately, updates will only be available upon release of Plazmic patch. Until then, as a temporarily solution, please refer to their FAQ page http://elecite.com/faq.html)

James let me know that US Cellular has updated their OS for the 8330, 8330m, 8130, 8130m, & 8830. That brings them all up to date with the latest OS 4.5.0.169 which seems to be the latest OS available as far as I remember.

Hedone Design is back with their latest theme release called Digital. A mixture of colorful, swirly images and sleek bottom icons, Digital costs $6.99 and is available for a variety of BlackBerry devices. I am playing with the Bold version as I write this and this theme offers all the charm and swiftness that Hedone Design’s themes are most known for.

I love the bright visuals and the hidden bottom dock as well as the simplicity of the battery/signal meters and the way that everything is centered nicely at the top of the home screen.

IMO, the whole theme screams artistic style and professional execution.

But it doesn’t end there…as an added feature, there’s an expansion pack of additonal, alternative wallpapers that come in that gorgeous abstract image in a variety of other colors.

I got an email last night from Peter about Elecite’s latest theme release Opus. In actuality I was a little surprised as this look tends to differ from the stuff Elecite usually puts out. A rich, dark tapestry like background with an almost dual screen type concept…definitely an eye-catcher. I myself tend to like less icons on the home screen and themes that are more simple in design, however I did test the Bold version and my tastes aside…the theme works well. It’s a pretty good size file to download but once it was activated, it ran really smooth for me.

Opus is available for a variety of devices and take note that the theme will differ between them…so check all the info to make sure you’re getting the theme you expect. According to Peter, [Opus] definitely has its own uniqueness. You get multiple sets of customizable icons by tapping on one of the 2-3 dots on the bottom portion, for the latest BlackBerry models and 1 for the older 8300/8800. It sort of works like the dual-screen animation but faster and smoother. All icons are customizable but the top 5…those cannot be changed. Opus is available for the BlackBerry Storm, Bold, 8900, 8300 and 8800 models. **This theme and like any other Elecite theme, will not work on OS version .151 or the new Tour until we perform the necessary updates.

On a final note, Peter told me that they are offering a 30% off coupon to the first 200 buyers who enter the code ‘opus’ at checkout (Opus costs $6.99). Now, what you should know is that currently, this theme is selling for only $1.00 dollar. Yes, you heard right and in fact, you can get ANY of his themes for just $1.00 until August 15th. The theme gurus at Hedone Design are so back…pumping out some truly awesome themes one right after the other. Since Hedone started designing themes, he has become one of my good friends and I know he tries to create themes that not only look gorgeous but that work perfectly as well. TPXpert is no exception. Though I’ll admit this theme is a bit intricate for my tastes, it is totally stunning. If you’re someone who likes quick access to a lot of apps from the home screen, this is most definitely your theme. I’m not gonna get too specific in this review, as I’ve put a video you can view below, but I will say that the Bold version I tested ran smooth and fast.

Brandy, from Artistic-Me’s latest release is called Impressions and the theme itself does seem to make a nice one, going by the screen shots. I was not able to test this theme myself but I have used some of Brandy’s themes before and I suspect this one works as impeccably well as the others. A brief description is below:

It’s a vibrantly clean beach-inspired Bottom Zen theme, featuring a bright color palette and textured glass elements; perfect for the summer season. It’s available for 83xx (Curve), 88xx, 8900 (Curve) and 9000 (Bold) BlackBerry devices running OS 4.5 or higher. (Theme is not compatible with the 8350i, running OS 4.6)

I am not sure who is going to be picking these devices up after the Tour launches… Or if anybody cares. I know the 8330 won’t go away overnight but I know people are dying to upgrade their CDMA Curves after being teased with the Bold & 8900…

Not sure why the Tour is showing with 3 different launch dates not including the July 12th date they have already announced… Any ideas Username?

Hedone may have taken a hiatus a short while ago but he’s back now, and in a big way. This latest release, FutureX definitely raises the bar in theme concept designs. Available for a variety of BlackBerry devices including the 8300, 8700, 8800, 8900, 9000 & 9500, FutureX has a gorgeous wallpaper of spacious fields and bright blue skies. At the bottom of the home screen, there are 3 softly faded boxes. Each one contains a hidden dock (pops up when you click on it) of customizable icons (amount varies between devices). To hide the dock again, you just have to scroll down. And Hedone Design hits yet another home run!

Melanie over at MellyMel’sThemes let us know she has a website devoted to her Curve 8300 themes. While most of them are girly, they are pretty cute so definitely worth a looking at when you have a chance.
