Official OS Release Updates For Multiple Devices

It is almost easier to list what device OS has not been updated over the weekend. I am not sure if all these pre-OS 5.0 updates are a good sign for 5.0 coming soon but hopefully they are just clearing out the pipeline.

Verizon BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 Now Available

The 8230 is right on schedule. David let me know that it is now available on Verizon’s website. The price is $79.99 after a $70 online discount. I cannot see the Buy One Get One promotion anymore so I guess that is gone… Sad.

U.S. Cellular Getting 8230 This Sunday – Verizon on Friday June 19th

I just heard from one of our reliable secret agents that U.S. Cellular is getting the 8230 Pearl Flip on Sunday. This is coming right before Verizon’s release on Friday June 19th. These will be the next two carriers in the US to carry the device since Alltel got it but Alltel is slowly fading into obscurity as they are divested.

No word yet on if and when Sprint will get the 8230… I guess the Pre is taking all their time.

As a reminder the features of the 8230 Pearl Flip are:

Two high-resolution color displays — an external LCD lets customers preview incoming messages without opening the handset
A 2.0 megapixel camera with zoom, flash and video recording capabilities
Large SureType keyboard for easy typing and dialing
A microSD/SDHC card slot with support for up to 16 GB of memory per card

Nothing really else new. Sadly the Pearl Flip is more or less ignored by many developers so it might not always be the best bet for users who are into games, themes, and other add-ons.

RIM & Verizon Announce 8230 Pearl Flip – Visual Voicemail Support?

RIM let me know that Verizon has announced the upcoming release of the 8230 Pearl Flip. This was a long time coming and I am glad to see that it will finally be coming out June 19th. The sad part is that the price will be $129.99 after a $70 mail in rebate which is WAY higher than the $49.99 of its GSM variant on other carriers. I did not realize that CDMA licensing costs were so high…

NOTE: The press release does mention visual voicemail support. If so that will be a pretty big deal for many people!

As a reminder the features of the 8230 Pearl Flip are:

Visual Voice Mail to help customers prioritize their messages
Two high-resolution color displays — an external LCD lets customers preview incoming messages without opening the handset
A 2.0 megapixel camera with zoom, flash and video recording capabilities
Large SureType keyboard for easy typing and dialing
A microSD/SDHC card slot with support for up to 16 GB of memory per card

Nothing really else new. Sadly the Pearl Flip is more or less ignored by many developers so it might not always be the best bet for users who are into games, themes, and other add-ons. On the other hand the device is pretty solid even if it does feel like it is always falling out of your hand.

8220 Pearl Flip OS 4.6.0.278 Found Online!

I just woke up bleary eyed to another email from Secret Agent 711 who just put up OS 4.6.0.278 for the 8220 Pearl Flip. The 8220 does not see that many OS leaks so this may be worth a go if you have one.

Premium iVista2 Theme from The Z Man

I had seen the iVista theme around and quite fancied its interesting design but I knew The Z Man (aka Zach) was making some interesting updates to it, so I was happy when he had it ready for me to do a review. Enter iVista2…available for a variety of devices such as the; 81xx, 83xx, 87xx, 88xx (OS 4.5) as well as the 82xx, 89xx, 9xxx & 95xx.

On the left side of the main screen, there are a total of (9) user customizable icons. The top (4) and the bottom (5) which are the first (9) icons you arrange on your application screen. On the right side, you have a clock (which actually tells the right time) the battery indicator, a calendar icon (when you highlight it, your calendar entries appear to the left and when you click on it, it takes you to your calendar) and just underneath, your messages icon. Whew! That was a lot to say…but in truth, there is lots going on in this theme. However, that said, the Bold version I tested was extremely easy to maneuver through. I have to say, I am pretty impressed with this theme. The more I use it, the more I like it!

Take note that the theme does vary a bit between devices (as you would suspect because of the differences in screen size, etc) but more screen shots can be found at this link. So take a good look at the theme shots for your device before purchasing. And BTW, you can purchase the theme right in our Berryreview Store for $6.00.

Alltel 8230 Pearl Flip Now Available – Verizon Users Left Out

This whole Alltel/Verizon thing has me confused. Verizon had to divest 91 markets that Alltel served when they purchased Alltel. It looks like Alltel is still going strong and showing up Verizon by releasing the 8230 before them. Alltel announced this before but the device is now actually available for purchase on www.shopalltel.com and at their stores as of today.

Alltel is offering the BlackBerry Pearl Flip for $79.99, after a $70 mail-in rebate with a 2 year contract. I know Verizon users are waiting for their updated Pearl but word on the street is that it is coming soon…

Bell BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 (CDMA) Now Selling for $29.95

It looks like Bell in Canada was the first out the door wit the CDMA 8230 Pearl Flip. I thought Verizon had a chance of putting it out first but I guess they missed the boat. Just to keep in mind the 8230 has GPS integrated instead of Wi-Fi like the 8220.

The Bell 8230 is going for a surprisingly cheap $29.95 until March 12th if you sign a 3 year contract. BTW what is the story with these 3 year contracts? 2 years in the US is bad enough. The 8230 with a 2 year contract on Bell is $329.95!!! WTF…

Premium Animated Beachfront Theme from BPlay

McKay from BPlay sent this one in to me last week, but I’ve been away so am just getting to it now. I did, however, have a chance to play around with this theme and I can say that Beachfront on my Bold is pretty darn cool. The main screen features this sharp photographic image of a gorgeous tropical beach where the waves animate gently onto the shore. It’s a very tranquil and relaxing site on your Berry and the animation is also on the locked screen as well. The theme is a pretty big file to download, but interestingly enough, it doesn’t lag at all as you move in and out of screens. What I like about BPlay’s themes is that they are always professionally done yet are reasonably priced. This one costs $5.99 and is available for most recent Blackberry devices except the 8830 at BPlay.com. Check out the video below!

Premium ‘Damask’ Theme for the 8100, 8200, 8300, 8800 & 9000

I hadn’t seen any new themes from theme designer Brandy (Artistic-Me.Com) in a while so I was delighted when she emailed me about ‘Damask‘. Damask reminds me of fancy French style parlors that you find in those huge, old mansions. The use of wood elements help with the visual quite nicely and the cream colored icons are perfectly in tune with the overall theme. According to the description, this is a wallpaper friendly theme, which means you can change wallpapers and it will effect the main, application and locked screens. (You know how much I love that idea!) I wasn’t able to test this theme personally but I have used Brandy’s themes before and she knows what she’s doing. The screen shots below are for the 8300/8800 version I believe, but the look stays true to this idea on pretty much all the device versions. However, I suggest you visit this page to view your specific device screen shots so there’s no question before buying. Also, a complete description of the theme is here. Damask is available for 81xx, 82xx, 83xx, 88xx & 9xxx devices running OS 4.5 & higher and costs $6.99.

Premium OSXLike Theme from Hedone Design – Comes with Expansion Pack

It’s late as I write this and I really need to sleep as I am heading out of town first thing (and I mean first thing) in the morning. However, I couldn’t resist giving a test run of Hedone Design’s latest theme. All I can say is: BlackBerry lovers who are Mac fans, UNITE! Hedone Design’s OSXLike theme is like having your Mac desktop directly on your Berry! Since I am a long time Mac user, I can appreciate the way the icons (user customizable), menus, background and everything about this theme brings the BlackBerry and Apple nicely together. It runs very smoothly as you move about and offers a crisp, clean take on a classic design. Below are some screenshots of the Pearl Flip version.

OSX Like is currently available for BlackBerry 82xx, 83xx, 88xx (OS 4.5 & up) & 9xxx devices, but according to Hedone Design, it should be available for the Pearl soon as well. There are several versions of this theme and it may vary in how it works and looks depending on the device and OS. However, all the information you need to know before purchasing this theme can probably be found here and here. I suggest you do your homework and make sure you are buying the style you like. OSX Like is available for $7.00 at our store and comes with an Expansion Pack (find at this link) of alternative wallpapers. Definitely a winner in my opinion.

Verizon 8230 Pearl Flip (aka APEX) Found in the Wild

BlackBerryInsider over at CrackBerry Forums posted an image of his new Verizon 8230 Pearl Flip for all to see. Nothing crazy new to see here other than a silver version of the Black/Red 8220 Flip we have seen until now. Not sure if this version will come with Wi-Fi or not, and I am kind of partial to the all silver body.

Free ‘Dontcha’ Theme for the Pearl Flip

One of the original theme designers, Steve (from PimpMyBerry.Com) recently sent in a few of his latest theme designs for the Blackberry 8220. The one that caught my eye was ‘Dontcha‘ (as in “Dontcha wish your Berry was hot like this..”) and I kinda wish it was. I mean, I love my Bold, but when I see cool themes like this for the Flip, I really want to have the ability to test them out. The main screen, features 3 ’silver bar’ rows (they look almost 3D don’t they?) each of 5 user-customizable icons that are free scrolling (left, right, up, down) set on top of a vivid gradient background. Just going by the screen shots one can tell that this is a very functional theme that looks rich and clean. Dontcha is available as a free OTA at PimpMyBerry.Com. Thanks Steve!

Premium ‘Be a Kid’ Theme for the 8100, 8220, 8300, & 8800

Sarah just sent me in her latest theme design called ‘Be a kid‘ for Blackberry 81xx, 82xx, 83xx & 88xx devices. I think this theme is so adorable, and I’m not sure why but it reminds me of my much younger days when kids would take yellow chalk and write all over their driveway. Anyway, ‘Be a Kid’ has a black, gravel background with bright yellow accents and icons. I don’t have any of the available devices to test it on but according to Sarah, “The homescreen icons are user-customizable, and they also scroll continuously (goes right back around to the first icon).” Be a Kid costs $3.99 and can be purchased via Sarah’s website.

Premium ‘Betty Boop’ Theme from BPlay

Update: I just got word from BPlay that this theme is indeed available for 8830 devices.

The other day I was visiting BPlay.Com and I happened to notice a new theme I hadn’t seen before called Betty Boop. I immediately emailed Peter and asked why he was holding back from me – LOL! I need to test this theme and I need to test it now! Anyway, he happily obliged me and I’m so glad he did. According to Peter, Betty Boop is available for their usual line-up of devices (8100, 8220, 8300, 8800 & 9000 Blackberry devices) and it’s a darn good thing as you ladies are gonna love this one. The main page has an ornate top banner with time/date, battery and signal indicators. The bottom dock has 6 customizable icons and features our lovely Betty Boop in the center in her famous adoring pose. The icons are cool and translucent and are framed by an ornate design as you scroll over them so you know right off the icon you are selecting. All across the theme, different Betty Boop images are used and they are all adorable. The quality of the graphics are very high (they are much sharper in the actual theme than the screen shots I took below) and even the script fonts they used are perfect. The whole theme ties really well together. Gals, if you’re a Betty Boop fan, do not delay in picking up this theme. It’s available for $5.99 at BPlay.Com. Enjoy!

Free Pink Sunburst Theme for the Blackberry Flip

My girl Tiffany over at Black Light Themes just let me know about a few of her latest themes. Since I don’t get many theme submissions for 8220 devices, I thought I’d post this one up. Pink Sunburst’s main screen image is a fresh blast of pinks and yellows that has an almost psychedelic feel to it. The icons are pink translucent ‘bold like’ and go great in the scheme of things. There’s also a version of this theme for the Curve as well as a few other new themes that Tiffany created. I suggest you head on over to Black Light Themes and have a look if you haven’t already. Rumor: CDMA Pearl Flip (8230) Coming To TELUS In February? (AKA 8230 APEX)

Our buddies over at BBSync got a solid tip on a TELUS 8230 CDMA Pearl Flip coming in February. This is the first sign of a CDMA Flip device coming to a carrier so I am guessing we will be hearing more about one on Verizon and Sprint soon. It is supposed to be available sometime in February in both black and pink.

Just as a reminder this looks like the 8230 codename APEX device we got hints about before.

This rumor is coming from a previously confirmed source so I would say it is pretty solid. Personally I am not a fan of suretype keyboards but both my wife and Greg love them!

Premium Solar SlideShow Theme from BPlay.Com – Very Cool!

Peter at BPlay let us know about a brand-spanking-new theme they created called ‘Solar SlideShow‘. Available for 8100, 8220, 8300, 8800 (except 8830) & 9000 Blackberry devices, Solar Slide features a hot new idea in themes, rotating wallpapers. According to Peter, “Our first one is our stunning Solar Slideshow, which features wallpapers of all 9 planets (yes I’m including Pluto) plus the sun, which change every 30 minutes.” I am running this theme on my Bold now and I love the way it works. Gorgeous images that change up every so often (great for someone who gets bored with themes fast) and eye-popping iPhone like icons make this theme a definite winner! The video below shows the rotating wallpaper process in a sped up fashion so you can get an idea of how it works but for only $5.99, it’s well worth the price. Premium ‘Metal’ Theme from Elecite.Com

Peter from Elecite let me know about their latest premium theme called ‘Metal‘. I did have the opportunity to test this theme and it runs super great on my Bold, however it’s also available for 8100, 8220, 8300, and 8800 devices (OS 4.5 + higher). Metal, IMO, is one of Elecite’s more ‘calmer’ styled themes and in that, I certainly don’t mean boring. What I mean is that usually their themes have lots of different design accents going on but this theme is simple, elegant and extremely easy to work on your Berry. It’s actually one of my favorite themes of theirs to date. The main screen has 8 user customizable icons that scroll across the bottom and highlights the selected icon in the white box, so you clearly know what icon you are selecting. Speaking of icons, these are some of the most interesting and user-friendly ones I have seen on a theme in a while. Colorful and unique, you’ll get used to them right away. For fonts, Metal uses simple, easy-to-read fonts that work perfectly with the overall theme. This is an extremely well-designed theme all around, both in looks and functionality. Metal is available for $6.99 at Elecite.Com.
