There are times where there is a need to keep our phone locked especially when we have it in our pockets or bag to avoid doing things that we dont want to do such as accidental calls. The BlackBerry lock button are pretty handy in such instances but may not always be the best method as these are physical buttons that are still vulnerable to such incidents. Now, the developers from Bulbera came up with this pretty app, Easy Lock Pro, which differs from the competition by getting you to slide UPWARDS instead if the usual left to right. Features of the application include:

1. Works directly with the native BlackBerry® lock button
2. Automatically locks when your backlight goes off
3. Unlock is as easy as swiping with your finger
4. Zero initial configuration
5. Starts automatically when your BlackBerry® is powered on and runs silently in the background. However, you can easily turn it off at any time.
6. Works for non-touch screen devices as well (just use your trackpad)
7. Configurable background. Use one of the backgrounds coming with the application or select a picture from your device memory / SD card.
8. Configurable sound effects
9. Customizable widgets: clock, notifications (new emails, SMS, BBM etc.), battery level and signal strength.
10. Option to disable auto locking on certain applications (either native or third-party). Very convenient for browsers, maps, readers and others.
11. Option to lock during phone calls

In addition to the PRO edition, they also have a LITE edition which features the first 6 features which will have adverts to support it.

Tiffany let us know that RIM and Verizon are throwing a sweet contest in the US for anybody to enter. The contest is broken down into three challenges. The crazy part is that Verizon and RIM are giving away FOUR BlackBerry smartphones to the top 40 voted submissions in each challenge along with FOUR $50 Verizon gift cards that can be used for one month of free data service. In other words Verizon & RIM are giving away 480 phones (they don’t specify what model) and $24,000 of free service and that is not even the grand prize! The grand prize is a trip for 4 to Orlando, Florida.

• CAMmute – Captures the onscreen image as a photo without the shutter sound so that if you find the shutter sound annoying, then why not take a quick simple capture of the screen using the CAMmute mode, which simulates a camera shutter mute see below for further details.
• Crop Image – Only want your friends to see just part of an image? Well now you can; by cropping a photo and saving it. Cut out parts that spoil your photos and only really show what really matters! (this feature can set you back RRP $0.99 if bought seperately from elsewhere)
• Edit Pictures – Apply any effect and crop any image as and when you like!

Stefan let us know that aBs JMicro has released their popular game The Moron Challenge for BlackBerry 7 devices. It has been available for the PlayBook for a bit now and they are building on that with a new BlackBerry 7 version. This version also supports the original Torch even though it runs BlackBerry 6 and a few other quirks so make sure to check out compatibility.

RIM let us know about a new BBM Generation program they are running for teens and twenty somethings offering them the chance to connect with celebrities who share their passion. They are offering up the chance for youths to be one of six grand prize winners and be the protégé of one of six young celebrity movers and shakers. BBM Challenge Council Gives Ambitious Youth the Opportunity to Connect with their Passions, Peers and Celebrities

Waterloo, ON – September 30, 2011 –Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the launch of BBM™ Generation (www.blackberry.com/bbmgeneration) – an online hub designed to help promote collaboration and achievement amongst youth through social media while also offering young people access to exciting promotions and contests.

BBM Generation launches a contest that will tap into and encourage the enormous creative and collaborative talents of young people as they pursue their passion in the areas of fashion, music, film, sports, popular culture and entrepreneurship. 

The contest is centered around the BBM™ Challenge Council – a group of high achieving young influencers who represent the accomplishments derived from talent, hard work and the spirit to succeed.  These teen and twenty-something movers and shakers have teamed up with RIM to find and cultivate the BBM Generation.

Young influencers who make up the BBM Challenge Council include:

Here’s how the BBM Challenge Council contest works:

• Beginning October 3^rd, candidates for each of the categories named above are invited to submit a video or photo and essay at (www.bbmchallengecouncil) telling the BBM Challenge Council member why they should be picked as a protégé.  Up to 25 protégés will be selected in each category and invited to compete in the Challenge.*

• Protégés will be sent a new BlackBerry® 7 smartphone for themselves and up to three friends, who will collaborate on the Challenges outlined below.  Each BBM Challenge Council member will also provide their protégés with their personalBBM™ PINs and communicate directly with the protégés during the course of the program to issue challenges and offer support and encouragement.

• The BBM Challenge Council will issue four separate challenges to their protégés over an eight week period.  Challenges will range from pitching an idea for a business to raising money for charity.  Protégés will use their BlackBerry smartphone to document their entries, collaborate with their teams using BBM, and tap their social networks to garner support as they compete for the attention of their council member. 

• At the end of the contest, a winning protégé will be selected from each category, earning a trip for their team to visit and spend time with their council member.

• The contest will unfold online as program followers can see videos featuring the BBM Challenge Council detailing each of the Challenges and watch video footage generated by the protégés for each of the challenge submissions.
