Tiny Meter has been one of my favourite apps for the longest time.  It has been stuck on version 1.1 for a while, and had mixed compatibility with OS7.x.  This morning Tim/@rrrebo let me know that version 1.2 is now in beta and available for public testing.  You can pick up your copy here. If you are unfamiliar with Tiny Meter read about the features after the break.

Features:

• lightweight (less than 30 kb)
• monitor battery level and discharge rate of your blackberry
• battery level logging happens only when battery level is changed
• battery icon is changed only when battery level is changed

Tiny Meter is also formerly named BB Meter, in case anyone thinks it looks familiar.

At the beginning of the year RIM released v3.0 of their BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app in the Beta Zone for the US & UK. Now they have released it out of beta though once again it is limited to the US and UK. I guess they don’t make conference calls in Canada & elsewhere?

Either way the new v3.0 of the conferencing app adds:

• Conference Call recognition in the UK
• Homescreen Application Icon
• Dedicated ‘Join Now’ button
• Just one click to Reconnect

We all know the annoyance of getting junk calls. They come at the most impossible times, and getting rid of them seems almost impossible! S4BB Limited recently released a FREE app to help you with this – Junk Call Blocker. Building on the success of their Hong Kong version, they have now built a free global version of this handy application. Junk Call Blocker recognizes and blocks incoming junk calls automatically. Apart from the existing black list, there’s also a custom blacklist allowing you to block custom numbers. The other way around, there’s also a white list, in case a call gets unjustified marked as a junk call.

Junk Call Blocker comes in three versions. The free version allows you to add 10 numbers to the custom blacklist. If you need to add more numbers, you can upgrade to the Standard version (100 numbers) or the Pro Version (unlimited numbers) via in-app-purchase.

Something cool to note is that Junk Call Blocker is a BBM™ connected application.

This nifty app worked very well for 2 calls so far. Looking for it to work its magic on more calls!

Thor45 let us know that Spice has released another solid game called Memory. This is Spice’s take on the classic memory game you used to play as a kid where you match the cards but is really targeted at kids though adults can also join in the fun. The coolest part is that the game is BBM connected so you can invite your friends to a game of Memory. There are multiple themes and difficulty levels to change things up.

RIM’ TAT (The Astonishing Tribe) group keeps on releasing new content packs for their slick Scrapbook app. Zach @TheBerryFix noticed that RIM has added a new Valentine’s Day theme pack to the scrapbooking app. Its a pretty slick update full of pink and hearts (I hate pink). I tend to not discuss national secrets over BBM but there seems to be quite a bit of demand for encrypted communications. As we mentioned before BBM conversations are not encrypted but are rather scrambled using a key that is found on all BlackBerrys. Ekboo has decided to take things quite a few steps further using RIM’s BBM SDK to create some serious privacy protection when both of you have the Ekboo chat app installed using their BBM plugin.

Here is a breakdown of some of the features:

• 512 bit RSA encryption
• You invite friends to chat over Ekboo and it automatically exchanges encryption keys on the fly
• It still has the read/delivered notifications of BBM
• Textbombs let you send temporary messages for a preset time and then are automatically deleted. You can make a single message delete or the whole chat.
• Remote clear chat lets you delete the conversation off your friends device remotely
• A Panic button lets you select a key to hold down which will cancel and close all your current conversations
• You can put a pin lock code on Ekboo to lock others out
• When you reboot every conversation is automatically deleted

So what do you have to pay to be a super spy? Ekboo is asking for $14.99 per user in App World with a 30 day trial available. More details are available at www.ekboo.com and they say encrypted file transfers are coming soon. I am hoping this will be used for good purposes like allowing users to bypass government oppression and censorship instead of nefarious purposes… Let us know if you plan on using it and what for.

Trevor Nunes has updated his awesome SEGA Genesis Megadrive emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook over the weekend. This new version adds the key rom cycling feature that I have been waiting for. It also adds some other goodies you will appreciate. It looks like Trevor is actively working on the port so hopefully more goodies are coming!

Features include:

• rom cycling!
• new gfx and gfx effects buttons
• tv icon selects scanline, blur, interlace ‘tv’ modes
• start button on right hand side of screen, top left is rom cycler …
• HQX button cycles through HQX scaling but currently not scaled, so kind of useless
• missing roms message sticks on screen if no roms are found
• dirs are created for you

I am always up for a puzzle game though Room Escape is a bit much for me. Still I have been hearing about it nonstop for the last month or two since Ivywire released it so it cannot hurt to mention it. Both parts of the game have you clicking around a room trying to find a way to escape from the mysterious room. Its sort of fun and frustrating at the same time and reminds me of a modern day Kings Quest.

Thom let us know about a fun new PlayBook game called Dragon Rescue. This is one of TRUTRUKA’s first BlackBerry games and it seems to be a real hit. I had a chance to play it and its a great “shooter” game with smooth graphics and easy controls. The game could use a bit of work in some departments but the gameplay is solid.

A buddy of mine let us know that Neurona Sistemas has released My Hard Disk for the BlackBerry PlayBook. The new app lets you access your PC’s hard disk including files and folders from your PlayBook to immediately access the files you need. The app works with a client on your PC and you have to register the address to make sure you can connect.

I guess good things come in twos. We just mentioned one third party Google Talk client for the PlayBook and now BBNews.pl noticed another one. Benjamin Bezine has released a free beta of his easyChat Google Talk client for the BlackBerry PlayBook today. This new app lets you easily chat with your friends on Google talk and check out their status. Not all the features are up to par but it is still in beta so hopefully they will round out.

RIM is continuing with their odd rollout of their new BlackBerry Music Store. They put out a beta in the Beta Zone for BlackBerry Music store in Canada and now they have released it in Canada and Australia (kudos to BBEmpire for noticing). This music store is powered by 7Digital and seems to simply be a rebranded version of the 7Digital app.

On the other hand RIM still has their Amazon MP3 for BlackBerry music app for users in the US, UK, Germany, and France. I am not sure what the deal is between the two but at least users of BlackBerry Music on the PlayBook (which is powered by 7Digital) can use the same account and access their 7Digital music locker between devices.

Either way check out the BlackBerry Music Store app in App World if you live in Canada or Australia

Update: As Shane pointed out to me you can simply use the native Facebook app to do Facebook chat for free though I still want to see a Google Talk client come out officially. (Better yet Google Maps!)

I am waiting for Google or RIM to release their own Google Talk client for the PlayBook. If you are tired of waiting and using the web clients you may want to check out Scott Greenberg Design’s new Client for Google Talk and Client for Facebook Chat. They seem pretty bare bones but functional. The Facebook chat client has been out since mid-November but Thom let me know that the Google Talk client just launched. Either way they are unofficial clients so buyer beware.

Terrence noticed that Jotsy has updated their public beta of Jotsy for the BlackBerry PlayBook to v2.0. In case you don’t remember when we mentioned the original beta Jotsy allows you to annotate PDF documents on your PlayBook and is free for a limited time. It synchronizes your annotations and documents with your PC through their “Cloud.”

The cool part of Jotsy 2.0 is that it brings synchronization of your PC to your Box.com accounts. This allows users of Jotsy to annotate any PDF document that has been uploaded to their Box.com account from their Mac, PC, Email, or other device. Essentially this extends Jotsy to work with anything on Box.com which has clients and interfaces with many other services and devices.

Features contained in Jotsy 2.0 include:

• Several bug fixes related to document scrolling, loading, and WiFi connectivity
• Ability to sync and access documents stored locally on your PC

Another day and now we have another emulator for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This new one is for the SEGA Genesis (aka Megadrive) and was done by developer Froggyface. Duke @OpensourceBB noticed the new project (GitHub) and the developer announcing the port on his blog. The emulator port is based on DGen SDL which is a popular opensource emulator for the Sega Genesis. Right now it has some limitations like ROM cycling and zipped ROM support but they are on Trevor Nunes to do list!

You can download and sideload the DGEN emulator for the PlayBook from MediaFire and find instructions on Trevor’s blog. Keep in mind you will have to “acquire” your own SEGA Genesis ROM files but a quick Google search should point you in the right direction.

"Syz: EG" is a slick game developed by TeamKrinoid using the Marmalade SDK that they have ported to the BlackBerry PlayBook recently. It has a really cool use of multi touch with each hand doing something different. You control where you are aiming your weapon with one finger while dodging enemy weapons with your other finger. This also means that the controls are not on screen blocking the gameplay. Syz also throws in some fun with different abilities and perspectives along with voiced dialogue.

SmarterApps has released an update to their popular Angry Farms (Angry Birds style) BlackBerry smartphone game. The new update adds 50 more levels bringing us to a total of 250 levels in Angry Farm. On top of that SmarterApps has added an in app purchase of Farmer’s Dynamite that allows you to destroy any level once an hour for a one time fee of $0.99.

The upgrade is free to current owners and you can pick up Angry Farm in App World for $4.99 if you don’t already have it.

Shape let us know that they have released a new version of their IM+ for BlackBerry app. The new version comes a little over a month after their large 10.0 release and improves upon that build. Shape was also kind enough to send over a change log with the details:

Version 10.1 – Release date: January 30, 2012

• "Disable Beep" option
• Optimization of app launch
• Scrolling history bugfix
• Configurable Inbox integration
• UI improvements
• Some additional bug fixes and performance improvements
