Ani let me know that Ajani InfoTech the maker of some of my favorite apps like SMS Viewer, & Stop Tilt, has just release a windows like task manager for the BlackBerry. This application takes the same features you see on windows task manager & gives you a lot of information about your BlackBerry performance. This includes a tab where it shows your applications currently running, my favorite Battery performance, System information, & Processes which goes more in-depth. The process option is only available in the paid version but all the other features are available in the free version of the application. Ronen did a post about another free application called Kisses which does similar functions.

The free application you can only see applications that are detected normally but the paid version unlocks the process tab that lets you see all other application that run in the background. The application has a really nice interface & it also lets you see application size & information. The system information tab where you can view more information about the BlackBerry system. Only request or wish I have from this application is that they add a close application button to close any apps running just like the windows task manager. That would be really nice and useful.

The applications can be downloaded from our store:

Free Version: Link

Paid Version: Cost $1.99 Link

Read more about this application from the description:

The ONLY application that shows you a list of Hidden Applications & Running Processes in Background.

Task Manager for BlackBerry shows a list of all running applications including Hidden Applications and Running Process in the Background. The app also allows you to drill down into each application to reveal information about its Vendor, Version No, Size, Download date-time etc. Performance chart over time and detailed system info like Free Flash Memory and Battery Temperature etc are also shown in separate tabs.

Application:. View the list of all running apps on your device.

Processes: View all Hidden Apps and Running Processes in Background which cannot be detected otherwise.

System Info: View important parameters about your BlackBerry like Free RAM, Free Flash Memory, Battery Temperature etc.

Performance: View a performance graph of Battery over time.

Detail View:. Drill down into each app to reveal its size, download date-time etc.

I never heard of www.hullomail.com is a free service & they have launched a new Visual voicemail client for the BlackBerry.

We have covered this application in the past and I can say that this is a must have app for those that like to test the limits of their berry’s like I do and accidentally nuked it. This is one of the few apps out there that actually works with Vista 64, am not going to start ranting on it, but is not the easiest to work with and hardly anything works correctly with it. Getting back to the topic why this application is simply a nice tool to have. The guys over at RimGeeks have updated BSAK to version 1.5. If you don’t know what this application does it allows you to either nuke (wipe device) your BlackBerry, backup 3rd party apps, factory reset, launch the app loader, and now with some new features.

One of the main reasons why I like this app is that is simple to use, loads quickly doesn’t drain your pc’s memory when using it. When you save your 3rd party applications it creates an .axl extension file making it easy to use application loader and choose which apps you want to reload. My favorite of them all has to be the device wipe or factory reset, I have used it many times in the last few days because my BES was not playing nicely and had to wipe and do factory reset. Without the help from this application it would have been a pain on a vista pc. If you don’t know what you are doing I don’t suggest wiping or using some of the advance features of this app but I do recommend it for those who simply want an easier way of backing up their 3rd party apps.

Here is a list of new updates from the developer, I included features added from version 1.4 as well

Needed:
.NET Framework 2.0
Blackberry Desktop Manager or Drivers
Before we get into the details of v1.4 we want to thank everyone for spreading are app so quickly. We have big plans for the future of this app you can expect some big changes in the future (maybe not so near). Anyways onto the new version!
New to v1.5
• Kill Processes Button added (if your having trouble connecting click kill processes to close (BBdevmgr.exe and RimDevManager.exe both started by desktop manager)
• Full System Dump (Save ALL Cods on device) (Dump CODs)
• Save button added to Read System (saves all the file names to a SystemRead.txt)
• Save button added to Read Event Log (saves Event Log to EventLog.txt)
• ACCURATE Progress Bar added to 3rd Party Backup
• ACCURATE Progress Bar added to Full System Dump
• Files now displayed as they are being saved
• Can now Save Multiple CODs at one time
• Error handling added when Read and Save COD button is pushed with nothing selected

New to v1.4
We had some fun with cosmetics in this build…
• BBSAK now has a new icon
• AutoDetect Now changes image on BBSAK to whatever phone is connected
• Read System now includes Version and Size (can be sorted, still working on size sorting)
• ALX now includes version number (displays in applications menu on phone and bbdm)
• BBSAK now closes BBDevMgr.exe and RIMDeviceManger.exe before attempting to connect (these are started by bbdm and cause issues with BBSAK)

Recently I seen many new twitter clients out there for the BlackBerry, and one of the new applications I was able to test from an early stage is called Twitterlerts from electric Pocket. What I liked about this application is the approach that it takes towards twitter, this application is designed for those who want to find out the trendy topics on twitter or do research.

Twitterlerts is not meant to be a full blown social twitter client but it does have those options included on it, what this application is meant to do is to keep you updated with topics you like to be alerted when a user tweets about it. When you do a search on a topic you can save the results and it gives you the option to be notify of new tweets. The application is simple to use. The UI is simple not the best one out there but not the worst either but it sure does what is designed to do. when using other twitter clients and you want to do a search of post from a user such as @berryreview it lets you just high light it and do a search from it. If you are a BlackBerry addict you could also set it to alert you of anyone tweeting about BlackBerry. Fox example I searched my last name turns out I own a coffee shop business!, I wish, but that’s what the search results showed.

Trainlogic let me know about their product TrainSchedule GPS Edition which looks pretty interesting. It has train schedules for quite a few US trains and offers it in a mobile friendly version. TrainSchedule is a subscription application for which you have to buy a 3 or 6 month plan. Its not terribly expensive at $3.75 for 3 months and $7.50 ($6.50 sale now) for 6 months but still I doubt I would be willing to pay a monthly fee. I take these trains quite often and it would be useful but nothing I could not find online, through Google Maps Transit, or by just carrying around a schedule. On the other hand I usually just take the NYC subway which does not even have a schedule.

Features:

includes a powerful trip planner

combines many railroads into a single network

works everywhere: in subways, tunnels, in places with no signal

easy on your data plan: stores downloaded schedules locally on your phone

includes trip and stop maps

fast and easy: great for everyday train commuters

Full description and cities/lines covered after the jump:

TrainSchedule shows schedule information on upcoming trains for the next 14 days (taking into account holidays, special days etc.) and also includes a railroad trip planner. Optionally (provided your phone has a GPS capability) it lets you track yourself while on the train to find out if your train is delayed.
A number of train schedules on the U.S. East Coast, Chicago area and California are combined into a single network. Select the train lines you are interested in, then the corresponding schedules are downloaded and stored locally on the phone. It is fast and easy to use. Finally, it is a powerful tool that can help you find the right train or connection when it’s not obvious.

Berry Wars looks like it fixes all of those issues and actually makes the text driven game actually look visually appealing. You essentially hit the streets of New York City peddling dope. The game is very addictive once you get the hang of it so its worth checking out.

It is on sale right now for $2.99 until Jul 12th after which it goes to $3.99. Let me know what you think!

It simply shows you where you are on a map and sets that as your homescreen background. The main problem is that it only works with the 9500 Storm GSM version so even 9530 CDMA Storm users are out of luck!

The app is a bit pricey at $4.95 but I think it is a real novelty. I am hoping that in the future I will be able to set my homescreen to show either the weather forecast and cycle with my location on a map using cell towers or even my stock portfolio. I think that would really be cool!

It essentially stores 14,000 cafes and restaurants with free WiFi on your BlackBerry. It includes listings from the United States, Canada, Europe, & Australia.

I am not sure where it gets this information but I can see it being very useful now that many BlackBerrys have WiFi. When I was on my last trip internationally I only left the WiFi turned on and turned off my data connection. That let me get my email whenever I went to a cafe or back to the hotel since I did not want or need to get email constantly while on vacation.

Free WiFi Cafe Spots attempts to help you with your roaming charges by using GPS (if you have it) to tell you where the closest free WiFi is located. It works without GPS and without a internet connection so you can use it internationally as long as you have the city/neighborhood or postal code.

I am not sure if you will be willing to pay $2,99 for the app but it is on sale for $0.99 until July 31st.

They just let me know that they have updated their application with some new features including the ability to send LinkedIn invites along with your contact. Pretty cool since LinkedIn has yet to make a BlackBerry app…

They have also slimmed down the size of the application in the new version and are already working on version 2.5. The upcoming version in September will allow you to connect via GPS (not sure how that will work), add photos, and include your social media contacts for over 20 social networks. You will also be able to join groups and connect with people from your phone.

Personally I think either LinkedIn or RIM should follow in DubMeNow’s footsteps. LinkedIn already has much of the underlying infrastructure necessary to make this happen if they just had an app. RIM could also integrate a sort of contact exchange in BB Messenger kind of like we used to do with Palm Pilots and infrared back in the day.

You can pick up version 2 from the App World or directly OTA at www.dubmenow.com

It essentially tells you where to get on and off the train to best reach your location. Since I take the subway every day I will definitely be checking this out but at $2.99 and at 4.71 megabytes I don’t know how many others will be joining me. The idea of the large download is that all of the information is stored locally on your device since there still is no cellphone reception in the NYC subway.

Features include:

No internet connection required; use it on the subway!

Diagrams for every subway station in Manhattan and large parts of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx

Includes locations of exits, transfers and elevators

Provides hours for exits that close

Easy-to-use interface

Exact door data for advanced users (available for most lines)

The app is available for the Curve & Bold but I am not sure about the 8900 Curve. Sadly it is only available in the App World so I cannot link to it either…

So what do you think? I personally have never heard of a BlackBerry app that is almost 5 megabytes. I just wish the MTA would use all the extra money they are getting from this new fare hike to give us mobile access in the subways and mobile friendly maps. (I doubt it)

Check out more details at www.exitstrategynyc.com

It requires OS 4.5+ and they are need more beta testers to give it a spin.

Personally I am not sure how well this will compete with the upcoming version of BlackBerry Messenger which has location based features but its worth a shot. The app gives you access to maps, directions and local search along with live tracking. Along with that you can share your location, status, and favorite places and limit how long you share that information for. The app will also share you status with twitter which is pretty cool.

You can register for the public beta at this link

Tashanna let me know about this new public beta of BBScanner which lets you listen to police and fire scanners on your BlackBerry. The app is free during the beta but I am not sure if it will remain that way. It looks like the app is using free feeds from RadioReference provided by volunteers so not all areas are covered.

The idea is pretty cool and I can imagine some ambulance chasing lawyers listening on their BlackBerrys… The audio is streamed through the BlackBerry Music Player so I think the app is just an easy to use catalog of available streams.

Check it out at www.bbscanner.com or download it OTA at ota.bbscanner.com

What’s new?

New Function: Resize Images — Over the past couple of years, the file size of photos has increased rapidly due to the “Megapixel War”. This can make sending image files from your BlackBerry® device quite expensive (for metered data plans) and time consuming.BBFileScout v1.1 now allows you to resize images to a user selected resolution — this will save you time, money, & also saves device or microSD memory! In a completely new ‘Image Option’ section, this new functionality can be user configured as follows:

Select the target resolution [1200px, 1024px, 800px, 640px, device resolution]

Select if the source file should be deleted after the resize image is created

Select PNG or JPG output
and

If JPG is selected, also choose the JPEG-quality

New Option: Show favorites at startup [General Options]

URL’s in BBFileScout about dialog will open the browser and bring you instantly to the website

You can read more at this link or download the app OTA here.

Uberman let us know about this new solution for tracking and logging your emails and phone calls on your BlackBerry. The app stores this information along with any notes you wish to add and emails you a weekly activity report from your device.

Features:

Automatically logs your BlackBerry phone and email activities

Allows you to add notes to your BlackBerry activity log

Automatically sends a daily or weekly log to your email.

Report includes:

Time

Duration

Type of Communication

Activity Details

The app is totally free and is supported by advertising on your weekly report. The solution works pretty well but I am not sure if the logs are also stored on their servers. From their FAQ it looks like they are not but it makes me wonder how the reports are generated if they are not… I sent them an email asking and will hopefully hear back soon since that may be a security risk.

Check it out at www.blacktracklog.com and let me know what you think!
