It is interesting to see pushing to fill app world with apps before it officially launches PlayBook OS 2.0. If you are android developer this offers a potential to not only get a free PlayBook, but also give your application more exposure.

For years, I was under the impression you could only install fonts with the assistance of an app. I recently found out that is not at all accurate. You simply need the a font in TrueType (.ttf) format. In this guide, for illustration purposes, I will be using the free (open source) ’Ubuntu-R’ font.

*WARNING: As we are editing/adding hidden system folders of the device, I can make no guarantee this won’t leave your device completely FUBAR. So please, only do this at your own discretion. I’ve only confirmed it working on OS 7 & 7.1 but it SHOULD work for all OS’ back to at least os5. Again I haven’t been able to test on many phones but I haven’t had a single problem either. If you are successful (or unsuccessful) with this method, leave a comment and let us know if it is working for you.*

One time setup

Download a file manager you can handle zip files with(rock file manager, filescout etc.)

Change options in your chosen file manager to show hidden files & folders

Navigate to ‘/Device Memory/appdata/rim/’*

Create a folder called ‘fonts’ inside of ‘/rim’

You should now have a created this directory ‘/Device Memory/appdata/rim/fonts/’*

*Note: Depending on the file manager, the directory ‘/Device Memory/’ may be called ‘/store/’. In that case, the location of the fonts folder would be ‘/store/appdata/rim/fonts/’

How to install a font

Find a font in TrueType format [.ttf] you’d like to use. In this example, I’m using the free ‘Ubuntu-R.ttf’

A) Download the ‘Ubuntu-R.ttf’ file (this specific font is in a zip folder) | B) Unzip if necessary

Rename ‘Ubuntu-R.ttf’ to ‘Ubuntu-R.font’

Cut/Copy ‘Ubuntu-R.font’ to ‘/Device Memory/appdata/rim/fonts/’

You should now have the (renamed) font located inside of the folder ‘/Device Memory/appdata/rim/fonts/’ aka ‘/store/appdata/rim/fonts/’

5. A quick reboot and the fonts should be available in your screen display settings.

*Note: The first time I did this, I had a font app installed & device encryption enabled and the fonts weren’t available after a reboot. If your having problems try turning off encryption before pasting the font or uninstalling your font app*

The font used for this tutorial is available for free here

Well now they have given a set of written instruction for all of the anxious rooters our there.

Ill throw the disclaimer in now, following the instructions that follow can permanantly damage your PlayBook, and BerryReview will not be held responsible if such actions happen.

First thing you will need to do is root your playbook with DingleBerry and obtain a USB OTG cable. You will also need the obvious, a PlayBook and a USB pen drive. The instructions that follow are from @guillemmateos and not of my own. It has only been tested on a rooted 1.0.8xxx PlayBook, so results with OS2 betas may vary.

Here are Guillem’s instructions:

When you have your USB OTG cable, you can proceed to run the commands to load the necessary kernel drivers. The nice part is that everything is already on the PlayBook, so you don’t really need to upload anything. The commands you will need to run are the following:

slay RIM_usbmgr-Winchester
slay io-usb
slay devb-umass
sleep 2
RIM_usbmgr-Winchester -m0s
io-usb -domap4430-mg ioport=0x4a0ab000,irq=124
sleep 2
waitfor /dev/io-usb/io-usb 4
devb-umass cam pnp blk automount=+hd6t6:/accounts/1000/shared/usb:dos,automount=+hd6:/accounts/1000/shared/usb:dos

The only line you really need to pay attention to, is the last one. It shows where the pendrive will be automatically mounted after you connect it. You can specify different mount points for different partitions just separating them by comas (in my example command, hd6t6 and hd6 shown)

The other commands just kill the USB server running and start it with the required commands to be able to run the USB port as a host port. There is also a command to load the kernel driver (io-usb domap….).

Last step – Connect your pendrive

If all went well, you should now be able to connect your pendrive and access contents on the mount folder you selected. Please keep also in mind that you must first create this directory for the automount to work. I also noticed that sometimes the kernel modules does produce a bus error and crashes. If that happens, just try to run all the commands again.

Guillem would also like feedback from other rooters about their success using these instructions and other OS version. I have a feeling this is going to open up a lot of doors and elements of rooting and be very popular in the community. Chime in and let us know what you think.

Scrid2000 over at OSBB has posted a great tutorial on how to downgrade your playbook OS using a local copy. Anyone who has been following the whole DingleBerry/rooting scene that has come to up in the past few weeks will know that the last 2 patches by RIM has blocked the root. These steps let you trick Desktop Manager into using a local PlayBook operating system to downgrade.

Chris Wade, the creator of DingleBerry had given us instructions on how to downgrade using an Apache server, and some of the guys over at CrackBerry had also been working on a method. But this method is for everyday rooters, who don’t have access to an Apache server.

Sometimes it’s the simple things. I’m the type of person who will go to great lengths to make something very simple happen, just because I can, or because it’s a challenge. While I haven’t Dingled my PlayBook yet, more and reasons to do so are popping up. Custom themes have long been a beloved BlackBerry feature, so the lack of theme support has been somewhat disappointing for those of us on OS 7 devices and PlayBooks. Even the shiniest of new toys have a tendency to lose their sheen over time without the ability to change things up and keep it fresh.

Enter Dingleberry.

Sith_Apprentice, a long-time member over at CrackBerry.com, posted this thread showing off his early successes changing the icons on his Dingled PlayBook.

Though there are no instructional details provided in the thread, Sith’s success has opened up yet another new sandbox for adventurous tinkerers to play in. It also comes with the <del>promise</del> hope of easy theming capabilities in the future. I can’t wait!

We posted some good video instructions for getting Android Market on the BlackBerry PlayBook but Shane has taken things a step further to simplify it. He posted up a simple 4 step method for getting Android Market on a rooted PlayBook which should make things simpler for you. While there really isn’t any crazy reason for doing this instead of simply downloading BAR android Apps it does add one main benefit. It allows you to register your Google account with your device for Android apps that use it which is useful.

The Dingleberry team has been showing off what exactly you can pull off with their Dingleberry exploit. Thom let me know that one of the Dingleberry devs, @neuralic, posted a nice video showing off how he got Android Market, Android email, and Android Google Apps onto the PlayBook. In his demo he is using an Android launcher and the Android Market installs apps like Astro file manager.

Google talk works and a other apps even with notifications built into the PlayBook which is nice. This is all being done on the latest PlayBook v2.0 developer beta which unlike the main release has not been patched for this vulnerability.

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

@neuralic also explains why some people may have been having issues:

I made a small mistake: the putty tool used to convert keys is called puttygen and is not included with dingleberry. You can download it along with putty itself at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/. Use this to convert the file named "rsa" in your dingleberry folder to a .ppk file which putty and winscp and similar tools can use. You can then log in to your root with these tools using "root" as the username and the .ppk file that you made as authentication.
The instructions on how to enable google apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook can be found at http://pastie.org/2974406. I’ll make a video covering these instructions at some point.

The Dingleberry team just followed through with their confirmation of jailbreaking RIM’s first attempt to keep them out by patching the Samba exploit. The latest PlayBook OS 1.0.8.6067 has been jailbroken in a way using a new exploit. According to one of the devs on the Dingleberry team, @cmwdotme, this jailbreak actually has you downgrading to a previous OS than the latest OS 1.0.8.6067 using this method for setting up your own PlayBook update server.

Keep in mind this is only for advanced users but according to @cmwdotme the trick is to run the new Dingleberry v2.1 that you can find at www.dingleberry.it and:

before you upgrade to the latest OS 1.0.8.6067 a then Login via devuser and run /tmp/setuidgid root /bin/sh to gain root

Once you confirm you have root access you can then upgrade to the latest v1.0.8.6067 and you will still have root access persisting

It should be interesting to see what exploit this latest Dingleberry is using to persist the root access now that RIM has patched the Samba exploit. Let us know if you figure it out!

When I say this is for advanced users I REALLY REALLY mean it. If you are uncomfortable with the command line or simply find these instructions complex just leave it be for now. When Dingleberry was released we mentioned that it just gave you root privileges as of now but it would be up to devs and tinkerers to take it further. That has started happening with developers really digging into the QNX OS before RIM patches it up.

One of the developers of the Dingleberry root exploit, @neuralic, managed to get the Android Market running on the PlayBook. This is not the first time this has happened but this time it uses the new Dingleberry root exploit. This is in no way an easy task but I am halfway through so I thought I would share it with you. He posted the instructions on Pastie but you can also find them below. Keep in mind this is all more of a proof of concept for now and we take no responsibility if you mess up your PlayBook or anything else happens.

How to get the Android Market working on the BlackBerry PlayBook:

Install the 2.0 beta on your playbook.

Root your playbook using the dingleberry tool found at dingleberry.it

Download the google apps package from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version/Google_Apps

Install and launch an android app packaged as a .bar file in order to set up the android system. I would recommend installing a launcher app of some kind since you will need one to launch the Market and related apps. A bunch can be found at http://playbookbars.com/

Log into your playbook as root with an scp client (eg: WinSCP for windows). Copy the system folder in the google apps download to the root of your playbook and merge it with the system folder there.

Open up a root ssh shell and remove "/system/app/SetupWizard.apk" (this can by done by typing in "mv /system/app/SetupWizard.apk /system/app/SetupWizard.apk.bak".

Kill the running android player "cd /apps/sys.android.XXXX.ns/native/scripts" (XXXX will be different for each device) and run "./android-player-cmd.sh kill-android-core.sh"

Launch a launcher app of some kind. Start up Android Market (or any other google app), enter your account details and it will start working. This trick will also install google chat and a few other goodies. The Android Market works and will install things after you do this.

Play around with the Android player and find other cool things!

Other notes:

Messing with the Android Player causes stuff to break quite often! If you edit the wrong files, you will probably have to restore your device. You shouldn’t be able to do any permanent damage, but make sure to backup before playing with anything. I take no responsibility for damage to your device.

The above steps only work for apks installed from the Android Market. For other apks, you can temporarily replace the file "PackageInstaller.apk" in /system/app with the PackageInstaller.app from cyanogenmod. You must restore the original PackageInstaller.apk before the next time that the android player reloads. You can use this method to get apps that update themselves by downloading a .apk file to work (eg: HCL Launcher Updater)

You can get an "Android Player" launcher app for your playbook by using the script "install-android-player.sh" from the old android beta. This will boot up and let you pick a launcher without opening up a different app afterwards.

If you find anything interesting and want to share it with us, send me (@neuralic) or @xpvqs a message on twitter.

UPDATE: Beta 0.3 of Dingleberry is now available

For those of you who were patiently waiting for @cmwdotme to release the Dingleberry exploit you can now rejoice. They have made the root exploit available on their site www.dingleberry.it. It is available for Windows users now in beta form and will be coming to Macs soon too. From what Chris explains this exploit takes advantage of RIM not signing the backups they take through desktop manager and modifies the devices smb.conf. This root exploit essentially lets them run a script as root whenever a SMB connection is made…

Check it out at www.dingleberry.it. Keep in mind this is for advanced users only and while the chances are you won’t screw up your devices don’t say we didn’t warn you! With escalated privileges comes greater responsibility!

In case you have been playing with LocalBar on your PlayBook all weekend you may be interested in this. Yohan, the developer of LocalBar, posted on his blog offering a bit of insight into how LocalBar works and what it does. In essence he is replicating the sideloading process from a PC by performing it using the PlayBook NDK to load apps from Localhost. This is a hack RIM could probably easily block by blocking sideloading from Localhost but I really hope they DO NOT decide to do that. If anything RIM should be promoting OTA downloads since that is the only way for Beta Testing and even their own Beta Zone concept to work on the PlayBook.

Here is how Yohan describes LocalBar:

I am using https://localhost method. To put it simply: it works like other desktop installers that connect via network or USB, it sends commands to an HTTP service in the playbook. The only difference is that it works through the playbook itself.

It is possible that in the future RIM may block requests from localhost

I don’t have time to develop nice GUI for this, so I just use the basic GUI API that is accessible using NDK. For example: in the NDK there is a “login dialog” but no “password dialog”, so for the password dialog I use the “login dialog” that shows the “user” field (which I don’t need).

This works on OS 1.0.7 and on 2.0 (developer beta)

With this you can sort of OTA install through the playbook. From your PlayBook Just go to a website that has some bar files (for example this forum) , download it using the built in playbook browser, then run LocalBar to install the downloaded bar files.

We are getting one step closer to being able to easily install PlayBook applications OTA just like current BlackBerry smartphone apps. Until now RIM has forced us to load apps only through App World or by using a convoluted sideloading method which requires a PC and quite a few steps. Now Yohan aka TinyHack has managed to bypass quite a few of those steps. He has released a small program called LocalBar that lets you sideload any BAR file for an application onto your PlayBook directly from your PlayBook. The only downside is that you need to first sideload the LocalBar application but after that you can use LocalBar to simply install any app from the device storage. That means you can download or transfer BAR files over Wi-Fi and then install them using LocalBar. In other words you get a sort of OTA download in two steps.

Yohan was kind enough to provide some great instructions on how to use LocalBar along with a download link for LocalBar. Check it out at this link or below:

First Install

You need to sideload LocalBar using your PC/Mac. There are many guides on the Internet like this one or this one.

Next time when the upgrade of this app is available, you can install the upgrade directly from PlayBook using this app.

Guide

You MUST enable development mode before installing the apps (you should have done this step when you sideload LocalBar.

You will need to grant some privileges to this app after first install.

Here is the main screen after you grant the privileges.

Swipe down from the top bezel to show the menu.

Choose “Install”. It will show the list of bar files that you have. It will automatically scan all your documents folder (including downloads folder from the browser).

Select a bar file, a confirmation dialog will appear.

Click OK to confirm. A password dialog will appear. Just ignore the user field. This is the PlayBook standard login dialog, and I haven’t explored yet how to disable the username field. And you need to press the OK button (the “Return” key doesn’t work yet).

After you fill in the password, it will start the installation. If everything is fine, then this dialog should appear.

Since the Android Player for the PlayBook leaked out and then officially came out in the public OS 2.0 beta users have been looking for which Android apps work on the PlayBook. There were quite a few lists being created and a few repositories of popular apps but now we seem to have something better. A group of hardworking enthusiasts over at CrackBerry forums created a public Google spreadsheet that lists all of the Android apps they have managed to get working on the BlackBerry PlayBook. It also includes links to download most of them so you can sideload them without having to convert and sign them yourself.

*** The credit goes out to quite a few people and I wish I could name all of them but since I don’t want to offend any of them I will just say you guys know who you are. Keep up the good work! ***

Here is how it works (instructions provided by Technomensch and in one of the original threads by Erandhawa)

If the application is listed, check the status

If the application is listed multiple times, make sure to check the status from the most recent timestamp

When you want to update the status of an application, you will need to resubmit it

I always enjoy bringing out the fun and unexpected, so here is another. Have you or someone you know ever wanted to manage more than one exchange account from their Blackberry? Activating your Blackberry on more than one BES is generally not common knowledge or practice, although your blackberry is definitely capable of being used on multiple BES servers and functions extremely well doing so. When you think about the way one can currently use BIS and BES together it does make sense, to be able to do this, as BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) is for most intent and purpose, just another type of Blackberry Server.

The reason this first crossed my path, was a client’s Admin assistant had a blackberry and she was asking if there was a way to provision this device to use two corporate email accounts. For myself, having just recently completed a BES 3.5 training session, I was eager to try. Much to the counter of the information available from RIM, as well as from the provider I worked for at the time, this functioned beautifully and we’ve been using this method in client sites, upon request, ever since. (Yes, I did say BES 3.5 as I’ve been a specialist with Blackberry products, for a long time…. :) LOL).

Anyways, on to the fun stuff, of how to do this!

What you will need:

- 2 BES servers (Personally I have one BES and one BES Express, but really it can be any combination)

- 1 Blackberry Handheld (mentioned in case this is not obvious…….)

- Either BES console access or Blackberry Desktop Manager access on a machine with the second MAPI/RPC mail profile available as a seperate profile.

The First step is to activate your device on the first BES, if you do not already have an active BES on it. You can do this through any of the usual methods of course. (Desktop, Console or Wireless)

The Next step is actually quite easy. Once your second account is prepared on the second BES you can activate it. Personally I use the wired method to attach my Blackberry to the second server, as I can re-title the account with the desktop manager (shown below) providing easy distinction of the accounts that I am using for sending emails, creating appointmens in the calendar and such. I has also done this with the BES console, via the assign device menu, but then you have to use other methods to distinguish the accounts in the drop-down menu’s.

The key for this type of desktop activation for the second email account, is having access to it with outlook, either via MAPI or RPC.

From the Desktop Manager click on “Device Options”

From the Enterprise Email Tab, press the drop down menu, next to Email system and choose the Secondary Profile.

From here change the Service Name for easy identification and escape and save.

Last but not least, once the above is complete, unplug your Blackberry from the desktop machine, wait a few moments for the computer to register the disconnect and then plug your Blackberry back into the computer. Your Blackberry should now start the activation process. If for some reason you receive the prompt to wipe your device, cancel out of that and let it continue.

You should now be able to select a “send using“ from either one of your BES acounts, as well specifying which calendar to add an appointment to or invite from. I hope you enjoy the added functionality and usability this brings and thank you for reading.

With the onslaught of new devices and device changes, there’s sometimes a need to activate your device on a Blackberry Enterprise Server Express. With new devices, BES IT policies, software upgrades, difficulties explaining to users how to download from appworld, software compatibility issues occur (as a good friend of mine recently mentioned in his article) and one looks like a star when they have an alternate method to do this. The point of this article is one such method.

On many carriers, when your Blackberry Device is on a BIS plan, the Enterprise Activation menu item is removed as an available feature. This is generally done by the change or removal to the service books on the device with it’s interaction with the carrier’s network.

Now for the fun stuff!

In order to get a BIS data plan Blackberry activated on a BES Express, when the menu item does not show on the device one needs to delete the device’s service books, reboot and activate. I enjoy creating these Step-by-Step’s, so I’ve written this article accordingly.

Step 1: From the main screen of your device scroll up and select the connections bar, or scroll down in your icons to connections.

Step 3: Escape to the main screen and type Service Books, or depending on the OS version, scroll down and click on Options.

Step 5: Inside Service Books, highlight each one and either press the delete key, or as listed in the next screen shot, click the menu key and select delete. This needs to be done for each service book, with the exception of the Provisioning, which will not delete. When you see the above, select delete. Once completed, please reboot the blackberry.

Step 6: Once the blackberry is completed, go to the options menu for Enterprise Activation. Either use the search to find it, or options, advanced and enterprise activation, depending on your OS version.

Step 7: Once you have the Enterprise Activation selection, click on it.

Since we saw the leak of an early build of the Android App Player for the BlackBerry PlayBook there have been quite a few users tinkering with it. We saw some screenshots of it running Android Marketplace but until now there were no instructions. For the brave BlackBerry PlayBook owners who like to tinker there is now a tutorial video put up by HaTaX from CrackBerry forums detailing how to get the Marketplace to work. You already need to have the Android Player sideloaded for this to work but you can find quite a few tutorials for that.

Check out the directions at CrackBerry forums and blog and the instructional video below. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

One of our long time forum contributors, Keeper, has released an updated version of his DDPb Installer app this weekend. This new version simplifies the process of sideloading Android APK installer files onto the BlackBerry PlayBook to use with the leaked Android App Player. This is still not the simplest of processes but it works like a charm and just points out how much easier RIM needs to make the process outside of App World.

Instructions are also included and I highly recommend checking out this forum thread for instructions and a link to install the DDPb Installer. Here are the basic use instructions:

If you want to install .apk Android package:

You have to install the Android App Player on PlayBook first(Use this DDPB Installer to deploy it onto PlayBook)

Make sure your PlayBook is in Development Mode

Run the Android App Player

Make sure: Settings > Applications > Development > The USB Debugging option IS SELECTED.

Don’t exit Android App Player. On PC, using DDPB Installer to add the .apk files(If you don’t see any files inside the folder you are browsing, please look at the File Type option of the browsing window and switch it to .apk).

When the apk is added onto the list, please provide password of your PlayBook, IP Address(It’s auto detecting PlayBook IP for you if you use cable to connect PlayBook to PC) then press Install button.

We have been trying a similar method but did not have much luck using the Android Development Bridge but N4BB is claiming it works a good portion of the time if you use these instructions:

Here are the steps but PLEASE PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. We take no responsibility if you mess up your device!

Here are N4BB’s instructions:

Software you’ll need to download:

Java JDK

You will need to have your PlayBook set to development mode. You can set this by going to the security options.

Most people who live outside of the US and Canada have usually experienced BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook apps that are not available in their country. While there are a few drastic things you can do to change that on BlackBerry smartphones there is a relatively easy way to bypass this restriction on the BlackBerry PlayBook. It all involves using HTTP proxies to make RIM’s App World servers think you are in the country where the app is restricted to.

Keeper was kind enough to list out how exactly to pull this off in the forums and I highly recommend you check it out if you have a PlayBook and live outside the US. It involves using free or paid HTTP proxies and is pretty easy to setup. Let us know if it works for you!

PS: If you already pay for a VPN service to access content in the US (Hulu, Pandora, etc) you may want to try it out instead.

Although the Playbook doesn’t have OTA capabilities there is another way users can load non App World applications. This method, perfected by Keeper (Berry Review Forums), is ideal for sharing ported applications and, in case you are a developer, allowing Playbookers to beta test your applications. Side Loading, as it’s come to be called, requires a PC and a few programs. Here is my attempt to create a tutorial for the process. Hopefully RIM simplifies this process but until then this is what we have.

First (on your PC) download and install JRE (Java Runtime Environment)

http://www.mediafire.com/?siwn5so7n66oqi6 (Windows 32)

http://www.mediafire.com/?4qkn7qwdho6cil9 (Windows 64)

Then download and install the Development Mode Installer which is used to load applications on your Playbook.

http://www.mediafire.com/?od4fft3qm2ai4sx

Once you are all set up on the Pc end you must enable Development Mode on your Blackberry Playbook.
Open your Playbook Settings (Swipe Down From Center on Home Screen)
Under Security select Development Mode and switch it to ON.
You will be prompted to enter a password . Make sure you enter something that is easy to remember.

Go back to your Home Screen. You will now see an icon of a character on your Home Screen Tool Bar.
Make sure you are connected to your Wifi and select the icon. You will see your I.P. address shown.
Write down or remember your I.P.

Now, on your PC open the DDPB Installer. Enter your I.P. and Password you chose earlier.

Side Loading is ideal for users that can not access App World (Only available in US/Canada). Louis.Keeper has put together a healthy list of 50+ applications that will keep you busy. These are all available on App World and are intended for those who can not access App World. They are also all free.
http://www.mediafire.com/?qv7odxcxt28s7

Save the desired applications to your computer (make a new folder where you can easily access them).
In the DDPB Installer, click Add and select the Application(s). Make sure they are checked (check-box) in the DDPB Installer and click Install.

You will see this screen confirming the Applications are installing to your Playbook.
Once completed you can see them and use them on your BB Playbook.

Side Loading can also be used by Developers to share beta versions of their App World applications or rejected apps. Simply package your applications as a .Bar and find a suitable host and there you have it! Anyone with the know how can download your .Bar apps to their Playbook!

Major thanks to Keeper of the BerryReview Forums for bringing this to everyone’s attention. Check out his original thread for more support:
