BlackBerry To Close Their Software Design Operations in Sweden

According to reports, BlackBerry is seeking to close down its software design operations in Sweden. The business started following its acquisition of The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) in 2010. According to the Svenska Dagbladet, BlackBerry will be letting go just over 150 employees: 93 in Malmö and 60 in Gothenburg. However, it is not clear who will be taking over their work, just yet.

Many of us, including myself, expected something revolutionary from BlackBerry when they bought TAT for SEK800,000 to work mainly on the UI for the PlayBook tablet, and to lend design expertise for the then upcoming BlackBerry 10 UI. However, by 2013, most of the TAT team had left to form their own company TOPP which clients now includes rival Samsung.

According to BlackBerry:

At this time, we are considering the closure of our offices in Sweden. Since this may impact approximately 100 employees, we are now initiating consultations with the employees’ trade unions

Are you disappointed in this or did TAT deliver in your opinion?

  1. this doesn’t sound good to me.
I always appreciate the great work of BlackBerry’s design team in sweden.
Yes – some of the former TAT devs are gone, but from my POV the team in sweden still is a great team and (for me) was a guarantee to get great BB10 OS UI / UX.

  2. I like what TAT has done for BlackBerry so far – best OS on the market, however I hope this doesn’t mean that BlackBerry is going to be less creative in their OS development. BlackBerry needs to continue to push the envelope in their hardware/software design and up their marketing game.
