BlackBerry has been going around showing off eBBM (aka BBM Protected since they announced it a few months back. They have also been talking up the upcoming BES12 rollout that combines BES 5 and BES 10. The first rollout of BBM Protected is set to come out in June with the addition of Suite B compliant encryption which is required by the US government for classified communications. This brings BBM up to par for government use by not only scrambling but also encrypting the communication in an auditable way.

The first version will run on BBOS 6.0+ and BlackBerry 10.2+ regulated devices with Balance and iOS/Android coming later in the year. All they have to say is that each message in BBM protected is encrypted with a different random key so that even if one message is broken it would not open the door for others. Here is the rollout schedule for it:

  • eBBM Suite – BBM Protected – June launch for BBOS devices running BBOS 6+ and Regulated BB10.2+ activations
  • Regulated+Balance (and potentially Balance only) activations Early Fall 2014. (September/October)
  • Android/iOS BBM Protected – Late Fall/Early Winter (November) launch with BES12.

In other updates we have BES12 also showing up in this demo on video showing how it can manage more than just mobile devices. In Canada they are already using it in healthcare companies to manage RaspberryPi and Arduino boards and it comes in on premise, cloud, and hybrid. BES 12 is set to launch in November with a multi tenant option coming in March of 2015 for small and medium companies.
