BlackBerry 10.3 Adds New Two Finger Gesture for Quick Settings Menu

Quick Settings

It looks like BlackBerry is really focusing on hammering down usability with BlackBerry OS 10.3. Michael Clewley let loose on his BBM Channel about a new feature that is coming in 10.3. Specifically it is a new two finger gesture down from the top bezel to access the Quick Settings Menu from ANY application. That means even if you are inside BBM you can swipe down with two fingers to get the menu. This cuts out the step of having to first minimize the running app to get to the homescreen. Android has something similar for their Quick Tiles but its inconsistently implemented by manufacturers. Either way it is a much welcome change!

  1. I’m glad BlackBerry is addressing this. I hope they make this a single swipe gesture, to keep that one handed usability.

    • Yeah but developers who added that feature in their native applications will be screwed hence the double finger gesture. I strongly believe that is the case only in applications and not the home screen.

  2. I don’t know how welcome that will be for enterprise users. The two finger down-swipe is used to access BlackBerry Balance. So I assume users will still have to minimize an app to do the two finger down-swipe to access Balance.

  3. I am quite happy with the one finger gesture swipe down for the quick settings. Not a fan of the two finger gesture swipe unless it can serve a different purpose.

    • In this case I think that they added the two finger gestures because some apps already rely on the one finger gesture to bring app settings/menus from the top example would be Blaq. This will allow the apps I imagine to still keep that and the device to distinguish from what menu you are trying to activate.

      • Yes, unlike Android and IOS, BB10 makes full use of their swipe getures including the single swipe down gesture with in an app, however I was hoping BlackBerry would include this in options, or the option bar at the bottom.

  4. Very excited about the sneak peaks we are seeing for OS 10.3!

  5. I have been enjoying using the quick settings items. One of the smartest things ever implemented in my opinion. Seeing them make it even more usable is certainly a welcome addition. We’ll all get used to however it works in no time.
