BBM Team Evaluating “Skype Like” VoIP Service in Monetization Efforts

BBM Voice

BlackBerry has been doing a great job of giving BBM the freedom to evolve much faster as a sort of startup inside the company. It is no secret that one of the main focuses for the BBM team is monetization efforts and in a recent media briefing, David Proulx, BlackBerry Senior Director of BBM Business Development, said that BBM Voice will remain free but the company did not rule out Skype Like features. Specifically he said that:

“The Skype model is one possibility. There are also other approaches that we can take in terms of monetization”

He also went on to give me hope that BBM might expand beyond mobile for non-enterprise users too by saying that:

“We are still investing in the organic elements that drive users. Any monetisation is driven by large user base. Our idea is to take BBM to as many end-points as possible,”

  1. Does this mean we may end up having to pay for BBM Voice/Video after we’ve had it free all this time?

  2. Absolutely not. It will remain free but maybe something like calling real phone numbers in other countries would cost money like Skype

    • Yeah I think that’s what they mean. making a desktop BlackBerry Messenger wouldn’t hurt as well.
