BlackBerry Z3 Uses Resolution Upscaling Trick But Lacks NFC & Gyroscope

It looks like the low cost Foxconn built BlackBerry Z3 is going to be released any day now and BlackBerry has given developers a heads up on what to expect. They highlight two points about the device that set it apart from previous BlackBerry 10 devices. First of all they clarify that even though the BlackBerry Z3 has 540×960 resolution in 16:9 aspect ration, BlackBerry has tricked the apps to believing they are running on the BlackBerry Z30’s 720×1280 resolution with a lower pixel density.

The other areas where BlackBerry cut cost to bring in this low priced BlackBerry 10 device was removing the NFC radio and Gyroscope from the device. I was hoping to at least see NFC but that was changed in the docs recently to reflect it missing on these devices.

  1. I don’t see the need for NFC…it hasn’t really caught on here and people don’t really use it for making payments… I have yet to see NFC being used or talked about in India at least… the Z3 is an entry level device for emerging markets…if they can cut costs by removing stuff that isn’t going to be used then I see no problem in that!
