BlackBerry News AND BlackBerry Newsstand Are Now End of Life

BlackBerry has nixed two of their news products this week. First of all they have killed off BlackBerry News for the PlayBook and BlackBerry 7 devices. That really is the last vestige of their Viigo acquisition being decommissioned and will no longer work. Essentially it will be end of life on April 3rd. Details are here.

On top of that Blackberry is killing the PixelMag powered BlackBerry Newsstand for BlackBerry 10. All of those subscriptions are being discontinued and will end when your subscription is over. On top of that BlackBerry is recommending you download what you already purchased so you do not lose your copy. Just make sure to do it before the sunset date of April 30th, 2014. This makes me wonder how many people were using the Newsstand app…

  1. I’ve had my Z10 over a year and I’ve never opened NewsStand. Did anybody use it?

  2. viigo was one of my favorite apps before they were acquired by BB.

  3. Shit, really? I read BlackBerry News on my PlayBook every morning. I’ve been holding out to buy a new tablet, I guess thin is my clarion call.

  4. Oh, so that’s what that icon was for…

  5. I opened that Newsstand maybe twice. It has a confusing UI and you’re never really sure if you’re being charged for a magazine or not. I won’t miss it. However, I DID use News on my PlayBook a lot for my RSS feeds. I’ll miss that. In both cases, though, it’s just more free space on my devices! :)

  6. I don’t understand why they would let BlackBerry news die. Why don’t they combine it together with BlackBerry Travel, BlackBerry Maps/Traffic, Wikitude, BBM and Voice control to make a true successor to Viigo, what a waste.

  7. They may not have had too many programs but Blackberry News was there best app for OS7 devices. This was as essential as the hard keys bar.

Brainless, rudderless. Blackberry, End of Life.

  8. I don’t know if people running bb can be this stupid but sometimes I think they are intentionally taking the company down so that they can buy back the stocks cheaply and take the company private. The one thing that I use on daily basis is the bb news which I find better than most other apps. Every time I think about bb and its dwindling fortunes I think about the extent of stupidity and if that is possible or is it intentional and dishonest.
