Apple Carplay Running on QNX Car Multimedia Units

More details have been revealed by Apple showing off their plans for their Carplay. It makes quite a bit more sense when you realized that it is just mirroring the display of iOS devices on a regular car display instead of running a car multimedia system on iOS. Essentially the system requires an iPhone to be used and works through Siri together with notifications and more. Lucas @N4BB dug into it a bit and found that this is essentially just a mirroring technology that just works on the media platform already in the car such as QNX. Apple is actually a QNX strategic partner in the auto market.

Paul Leroux of QNX actually confirmed some of it for Lucas saying that:

“Connectivity to smartphones and other mobile devices is a key strength of QNX Software Systems’ platform for car infotainment systems, and many automakers and tier one automotive suppliers use our platform to implement smartphone/head-unit integration in their vehicles. We have a long-standing partnership with Apple to ensure high-quality connectivity with their devices, and this partnership extends to support for Apple CarPlay.”

In other words BlackBerry probably implemented the Carplay tech in QNX just for mirroring iOS. Interesting developments…

  1. What still gets me about QNX and BlackBerry, is that QNX still seem to talk like they are their own company as if no ties to BlackBerry at all. Nevertheless it would be funny to hear someone say, “I use carplay, powered by BlackBerry”

  2. I’m with Mr. Cromwell above.

I’ve spent most of the morning just Googling what car stereo manufacturers already use QNX. It is an exercise in frustration right now. Even the fine technicians at Crutchfield had trouble understanding that I just wanted to know if any of their stereos use QNX? As soon as I explained that a current car stereo that uses QNX will support the upcoming Carplay, they kept insisting nothing they currently sold would support it. I’m smart enough to know when to just politely thank someone and hang up.

Anyway, even QNX’ website is maddeningly vague. I couldn’t find out who uses QNX in aftermarket car audio right now. Its been around for years, but it is tough to find out much of anything about it.
