Some of you may remember that the Rockstar Consortium is going for Android’s jugular with a lawsuit against all the Google manufacturers. The Rockstar Consortium is jointly owned by BlackBerry, Microsoft, Sony, Ericsson, EMC, and Apple and is made up of Nortel Networks patents they acquired in 2011. Now that Huawei has settled this puts the other defendants in a sticky situation. Google, Samsung, ZTE, LG, HTC, Pantech, and Asustek all have to decide what to do next.
The Rockstar consortium has spent the last few years with 10 full time workers trying to reverse engineer other products to see if they are infringing their licenses. I am not a big fan of these patent lawsuits but at least this time it is a proxy war between companies that actually make products instead of just law firm patent trolls.
Should be interesting to see how this plays out… Check out the details over at FierceWireless. Kudos to Rod for the tip!
