Pentagon Denies Buying Any New BlackBerry Devices

We told you before that the Pentagon was rolling out their new mobile initiative with 98% of the devices being BlackBerrys. It turns out that there is a little caveat there. These are not new BlackBerry devices according to a statement made by the Pentagon to The Verge. They actually went as far to state that :

Absolutely no new orders have been placed for new BB devices. The DISA press release put out Jan. 16 never alluded to any devices being purchased. The 80,000 BBs and 1,800 non-BB devices referenced in the release are legacy systems already in DoD inventories.

Either way 80,000 devices is not a gamebreaker but its nice to see the DoD is sticking with BlackBerry for now.

  1. Yeah but BlackBerry 10 is what BlackBerry is pushing for not legacy devices.

  2. Nowhere in any news did the Pentagon State these were new devices.
But doesn’t really matter, because they plan on growing to about 300,000 mobile devices. And that includes the majority being BB10.

This 80,000 legacy devices is also a testament of how good BlackBerry security truly is. Even it’s old devices pawn the competitions newer OSs.

    • Reference please.

      • The pentagon also stated they were going to buy 300,000 new mobile devices, which did include the new BB10 devices, among iOS and Android.

The idea of the $16 million plan is to make sure that up to 300,000 military users don’t leak military data or corrupt military networks while mobile.
