BlackBerry Confirms BBM For Windows Phone is Not Currently in Development

BBM Cross Platform

BlackBerry focused on Android and iOS for cross platform BBM and some have been wondering if Windows Phone is coming soon. This would be a good move for BlackBerry since there are not that many cross platform messengers that support all four platforms. Either way BlackBerrys David Proulx, Senior Director of BBM Business Development, confirmed that it is not in the cards. He told TrustedReviews that:

“It [the continuing lack of a BBM Windows Phone app] is entirely market driven,.. Our initial launch on iOS and Android was a function of the prevalence of those platforms.”

“It is not a statement of intent, and it’s not a strategic or religious thing, it’s just a function of when does it make sense and when is it something that consumers demand in sufficient numbers to make it worth our while and worth their while.”

That settles it for now. Personally I am just hoping they are planning to push the envelope beyond the current BBM feature set for all BBM users. What I really want now is the ability to use BBM on multiple devices and syncing read/unread status between them and my desktop… I dream big 🙂

  1. Desktop BBM would be amazing. Especially with voice and video.

  2. The BBM team has a lot of work to do to penetrative the Android and iOS markets. I wouldn’t consider a lack of Windows Phone a huge setback considering the fight they have getting Voice & Video and other key features in BBM before the competition does. Once on solid ground, a Win Phone client will come.
