BlackBerry Testing Out BBM on Android 2.3 Gingerbread in Beta Zone

BBM Cross Platform

We have heard from a few readers that BlackBerry is working on a beta program for BBM on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. They have sent out invites to users and it seems like the goal is to bring support for BBM to the dated Android OS. There are still about 20% of Android users on Gingerbread especially in developing countries where BBM is still huge. Its nice to see BlackBerry looking to lower the bar below Android 4.0 for users who are not there yet.

Let us know if you are in the beta program!

  1. I am so happy to hear this. My best friends in Cyprus have the older androids and can’t install BBM. I deleted what’s app and have been trying not to put it back on my phone. Yay!

  2. Does this mean I could possibly sideload the Gingerbread version on my PlayBook? Nothing like getting an Android version of a BBRY app on my device created by BBRY before a native version is available. SMH

  3. I believe the constraint is not the OS version but pre ICS devices have ram below 512 mb. Gingerbread phones can be as low as 256mb and even 128mb ram. BBM service/process can expand upto 200mb causing lag n freeze. Would be awesome if BB can optimize bbm to run on these devices.

  4. I’m using Samsung Galaxy Pocket running on Gingerbread 2.3.3 (GT-S5300) I downloaded the BBM App its just that it uses all the ram and closes every other opened apps.
