There was quite a bit of back room dealing going on in the strategic review BlackBerry underwent earlier this year. We know that BlackBerry was having multiple threads of conversation with different companies which led to the current Fairfax investment and John Chen as CEO. The Globe and Mail (I am loving their coverage recently) did a nice write up on the Canadian behind the strategic review at BlackBerry, Timothy Dattels. Dattels joined BlackBerrys board in 2012 at the request of Ms Stymiest and Mr Martin and currently is a senior partner at TPG Capital. The G&M did not manage to get Dattels to comment on the profile they did on him but it does give you some background based on friends and previous acquaintances. Its a great read if you have the time.
I did find it interesting that the G&M speculated on the idea that a strategic partnership is still on the table. One of the ideas floating is to work with Google to create a secure version of Android to work with BlackBerrys NOC or to tie in with an Asian manufacturer to take over the handset business. It would really help John Chen if he could line up a strategic partnership for the future direction of the company.
