Creative Users Working on Getting Google Apps (Gmail, etc) on BlackBerry 10.2.1

Gmail BlackBerry 10 YouTube BlackBerry 10

I am consistently amazed by the creativity of driven BlackBerry users. The latest example is the many users and developers working on getting Android apps that require Google Play Services working on BlackBerry 10.2.1. This includes apps made by Google like Gmail, Google Maps (login), YouTube (Login), Google Music (Login), Hangouts (Login) and more. By default you can install these apps but they tell you they need Google Play Services. There are also many games and other apps not made by Google that require the same underlying structure.

Sadly it does not look like BlackBerry is announcing a deal to bring Google Play Services to BlackBerry 10 but hopefully they are working on it. BlackBerry needs these top Google apps like Google Maps on BlackBerry 10 to address the chicken and egg app issue. On the down low BlackBerry may be working on bringing support for Google Play Services sometime in the future but that has not stopped users from trying to make that work now.

The best example I have seen so far is by MoneyToo on this CrackBerry Forums thread. He has basically managed to mod some of the applications including the Google Login Service, Google Play Service, and Ingress to make some key Google apps run and others to allow you to login to your account. This includes Google Maps, Gmail, YouTube, and more. I am just thinking that if one user can do this just imagine if BlackBerry goes ahead and manages to add support…

  1. This is freaking awesome! I already got Groupon to work using the fix he describes here. Previously, it always told me it needed Google Play Services. (I’d be happy to make the hacked APK available. What would be the best way to do that?)

I also loaded is pre-packaged Google Maps and that did allow me to log in. However, I’m not seeing the benefits as it did not seem to load my Home/Work or Starred Places.
