President Obama Still Holding Strong to His BlackBerry

President Obama has been one of the best unpaid spokespeople for BlackBerry. He has held true to the device for years and according to Bloomberg Businessweek that is still the case. This Monday on NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams we had confirmation again that he continues to be a fan:

Andrea Mitchell: “President Obama is the first U.S. President to use a BlackBerry, overruling objections from the CIA and NSA.”
NBC News Counterterrorism Expert Michael Leiter: “Knowing other countries would be interested in listening to his phone calls, he ended up using one of the most secure BlackBerrys on earth.”
Andrea Mitchell: He won’t give it up.
NBC News reporter Peter Alexander [at a recent White House press conference]: “Is the president still using his BlackBerry?”
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney: ”I have no change to announce in terms of the president’s communications.”
Andrea Mitchell: ”He loves that BlackBerry.”

That puts him in good company with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and UK Prime Minister David Cameron. I guess there is something to be said about using a BlackBerry to avoid the NSA and other governments spying on you.

  1. Yeah, but you need BES to be really secure not BIS. Are all BlackBerry 10 as secure as BES??

  2. I doubt anyone of them uses a standard BlackBerry or one on a normal BES. Merkel is surely going to use one of the Secusmart enhanced Z10s that were bought by German ministries recently.

  3. They are indeed on a private BES with extreme security settings plus separate encryption modules on top of it. Good news is that other platforms can easily be jailbroken, most within 5 minutes. BlackBerry stands above all the rest.
This nasty NSA scandal should bode well for BlackBerry especially since many companies are also spying on competitors – spying is not limited to governments!
