ShopBlackBerry Announces That They Are Now Selling Unlocked BlackBerrys (US)

BlackBerry Unlocked Smartphones

I always find it a bit sad when it takes BlackBerry weeks to announce something they already did. Well over 2 weeks ago we told you that BlackBerry was selling unlocked devices on their ShopBlackBerry website. Well now they got wise to it and actually posted their own announcement. Not sure what took so long but so far they are in the US only. So far they have the Q10 and Z10. Check out the announcement below: Launches Sales of Unlocked BlackBerry Smartphones in the U.S.

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – Oct. 17, 2013) – BlackBerry(R) (NASDAQ:BBRY)(TSX:BB) today announced that customers in the U.S. can purchase unlocked BlackBerry smartphones online directly from BlackBerry on

The first models available for purchase on are the BlackBerry(R) Z10 and BlackBerry(R) Q10 smartphones, which are available in both the black and white color models. The smartphones are SIM-unlocked, allowing customers to use them on GSM-based 4G LTE and 4G networks in the U.S. (AT&T, T-Mobile) and other countries around the world with carriers who operate supported GSM networks.

"For years we have been offering BlackBerry accessories directly to our customers on and today we are pleased to launch direct sales of unlocked BlackBerry smartphones," said Robert Perry, vice president, Global Retail at BlackBerry. 1. They just need to add ONE MORE model to be making a load of people happier.

  2. Why is the “flagship” Z10 priced LESS than the Q10?? Is the Z10 being positioned below the Q10 or is it a move to get deeper market penetration with the Z10? OR… is it a move to move some of that recalled Z10 inventory?

Now that I think about it, it’s probably just a move to unload those surplus Z10s. They should’ve just priced them all the same. That pricing schedule suggests that the Q10 is the flagship and hurts the Z10’s rep even more. That’s the last thing it needs.

    • I think it is absolutely stupid to call either the Q or the Z as a flagship phone – it hurts sales!

BlackBerry has yet to understand that geeks are the ones who buy the premium phones. They won’t likely buy the Z if the Q is being labeled as “the flagship” – they don’t want to have a second rate phone. If the “second rate” full touch is what they want, they will likely consider another device from Samsung or Apple.

Has anyone considered why Apple sells 9M phones in one week? It’s geeks upgrading to the latest and greatest. It has nothing to do with features but with what’s cool to have and what’s hot! They want it and they want it now.

BlackBerry must make their devices cool again. Don’t short-change the Z30 or the Q10 by calling either a flagship. They’re different phones for different folks.

My advice: build a super premium device and a low entry level device. There is no room for a mid-tier device these days, and low tier devices are needed for market penetration.

  3. Marketing folks woke up on the beach in Hawaii and couldn’t be located to make this announcement, hence the delay… 🙂 It is so laughable!
