BlackBerry Updates "Work Drives" App – Still Requires BES 10

BlackBerry Work Drives Update

One of the annoying moves BlackBerry has done is limit their great Work Drives app to users only on BES 10. Work Drives allows users to mount network drives from their devices. Sadly normal users cannot use the app to mount network drives over Wi-Fi which would probably be effortless for BlackBerry to do. Either way BlackBerry has posted a new maintenance release to the application that adds the following features:

  • Pin your files and folders in order to access them offline
  • Turn your legacy network drives into secure “cloud” storage repositories for your BlackBerry 10 enabled workforce
  • Automatically synchronize the latest changes that you’ve made to offline files
  • User controlled setting to choose the mobile network in addition to Wi-Fi as the method for file transfers and synchronization
  • Enhanced notifications now appear in the BlackBerry Hub as well as in the Work Drives application

Check out the update here and remember you must be on BES 10 for it to work.

  1. For non-BES10 users I guess they want you to use BB Link and RFA? Admittedly this is not as convenient/flexible as directly connecting to a windows share over wifi…

  2. Just bumping the AC comment above me. Regular consumers should just use BlackBerry Link signed into their BBID and associate any local drives/directories or mapped drives from their computer, no big deal!

Saying “Still requires BES10” is kinda silly because this application is specifically designed to be used with their Enterprise infrastructure/clients-not to mention your BES administrator has to allow the application to be installed on the work side for a regular user to even have the option of trying it, so this is a very narrow and specific usage.

It’ll be interesting to see if the update fixes some of the issues we’ve experience with it. Overall we’ve found this feature of BES10 to be one of the better things about BES10, easy access to your personal documents without having to go through a VPN or crazy login or configuration? Heck yeah! It’s a shame it’s not configurable by the server.. with time perhaps?

    • I agree guys but this app just fails it’s potential by being a niche enterprise app instead of available to all BlackBerry 10 users. Wouldn’t you want your BlackBerry to be able to mount network drives without BlackBerry link or BES? Why go proprietary when BlackBerry is pushing “mobile computing.”

In other words BlackBerry wrote an app to allow you to mount network drives over BES but overlooked all their non BES users that they could have effortlessly added this feature for.

  3. I agree that they could extend the native capability of the built-in File Manager to mount and browse SMB shares, however Work Drives is not in the same category and it will be extended for the enterprise market to support further products and features then just an SMB/network share-it’s just a matter of time.

I am reasonably confident there are third party applications available in BlackBerry World that provide access to SMB/network shares-I haven’t used any and I will admit my research is lacking as I personally don’t have a use for it, however if I’m wrong, let me know? 🙂
