BlackBerry Gives An Update on Borked BBM Android & iPhone Launch

BBM for all

BlackBerry has come out with an update on the so far failed launch of BBM cross platform. Sadly the cross platform BBM was supposed to launch over the weekend on Android and then iOS but sadly it was released and quickly pulled. Luke over at BlackBerry’s blog confirmed that BlackBerry saw over 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours of release with just an unofficial Android app that was released early. Supposedly this unofficial version “caused issues” and is delaying the whole launch. BlackBerry spent the whole day fixing this but we are hearing multiple concrete sources saying that there is something else going on… On the other hand the iPhone launch seems to be rolling out country by country as the hours progress!

Either way I wish them the best of luck getting BBM cross platform out the door. They really need a successful launch! Here is the full update from BlackBerry:

Prior to launching BBM for Android, an unreleased version of the BBM for Android app was posted online. The interest and enthusiasm we have seen already – more than 1.1 million active users in the first 8 hours without even launching the official Android app – is incredible. Consequently, this unreleased version caused issues, which we have attempted to address throughout the day.

Our teams continue to work around the clock to bring BBM to Android and iPhone, but only when it’s ready and we know it will live up to your expectations of BBM. We are pausing the global roll-out of BBM for Android and iPhone. Customers who have already downloaded BBM for iPhone will be able to continue to use BBM. The unreleased Android app will be disabled, and customers who downloaded it should visit to register for updates on official BBM for Android availability.

As soon as we are able, we will begin a staggered country roll-out of BBM for Android and continue the roll-out of BBM for iPhone. Please follow @BBM on Twitter for the latest updates and go to to sign-up for updates about BBM for Android and iPhone. These issues have not impacted BBM service for BlackBerry.

  1. Who wouldn’t have predicted this or some other problem. Keystone cops of the tech world, can’t do anything right.

  2. Somehow I have the feeling soon they will tell us relaunch is another month away (or even more). I hope I am wrong…

This sounds a lot like cross platform BBM was not ready for prime time, either the client or the server infrastructure, but they gave in to the pressure to launch before end of summer. If relaunch takes more than a couple of days, this would confirm it.

  3. The 1.1 billion new users are encouraging; When BlackBerry gets this right they should advertise for revenue, but it seems they’re not advertising anymore.

  4. I am really disappointed with blackberry. I cannot believe that they are not able to launch BBM properly. I believe this launch was more important than the bb10 launch but oh well. I guess this is why they are not the leaders anymore.

  5. Firstly you would think to block all prior versions to the public release.

Secondly, before we all call this a borked release, they have gone half around the world with the ios release, that doesn’t show a failure.

Lastly, this may very we’ll be a cause of an un-released version. We all want them to succeed with this but by installing an un-released version we have failed BlackBerry. So there is no one else to blame but ourselves who installed a leaked version.

Why don’t those who installed it, Uninstall and wait like all the others.

  6. This is why blackberry fails at everything they do. They hype proucts up so much and then they fail to deliver.

Blackberry only has its self to blame for everything. Everyone in the world was waiting around the clock for bbm and blackberry hasn’t seen this much excitement in their product in over 6 years!!

You failed miserbly blackberry!!! Just go and fold no one wants your useless products!!!

Everything blackberry does is a joke! Worse phones on the market and worse company in the world!!!!!

    • Wait a minute, fails at everything they do? I don’t think so! Sure, they’ve made some bad decisions, made some misteps and poorly marketed their products. But, they have also come out with some very innovative stuff, that could have given them a run for the money.
I’m not sure what you mean by BlackBerry promoting BBM. On the other hand, BlackBerry was quick to promote the BlackBerry PlayBook being discontinued and their recent poor earnings report. I really didn’t even hear about it, until I went to the Berry Review and Crackberry web sites. Bottom line: the execution and marketing for BlackBerry are still not there.
