Tungle and Gist Founders Leave BlackBerry After Launching BlackBerry 10

BBM Channels

BlackBerry acquired Tungle and Gist awhile back to upgrade the calendar and contacts system in BlackBerry 10. Now that those acquisitions have started to pay dividends it seems like they have lost the founders of both those companies. The WSJ is reporting that TA McCann, VP in charge of Social Networks, left BlackBerry two weeks ago. He was head of BlackBerry Messenger, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn apps. Marc Gringas, founder of Tungle, also left in recent weeks and he was in charge of the contacts and calendar apps along with the HUB.

Its a shame to see them go but hopefully BlackBerry has some replacements lined up. Rumors have it that these execs either left because they “simply had it” with BlackBerry struggling or due to the “entrepreneurial itch” of wanting to start another company.

  1. Is it possible they left because they had a “contract to stick around” for a predetermined time frame after the acquisition? I know that does happen sometimes when a company is bought up by another one.

  2. Better hope those replacements are, well, better. But yes it is possible they were on a short term contract.

  3. Yeah usually acquisitions have a requirement that execs stay for a certain time for options to vest or something.

  4. I LOVED Tungle and was SO sad to see it go. Hopefully Marc starts up something similar because none of the alternatives I have seen to Tungle even came close to being able to do all that Tungle did! As for them leaving BlackBerry, honestly, if they accomplished what they set out to do (and it sounds like they did), then sure let them go back to being entrepreneurs and innovating since that may be what they do best – they will certainly have an inside track into developing BB10 apps! 🙂

  5. I used both applications Tungle and Gist and miss them boh terribly. If both of them left Blackberry to start something new. I am excited about that.
