Some of you might still have BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha A or B devices that you did not swap in for a limited edition Z10. If you fall into that category you may have known that on June 30th 2013 those devices were set to be deactivated and bricked. BlackBerry actually explained a bit of this with the last SDK OS release when they dropped support for the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha A in the 10.1 beta OS.
Now BlackBerry has decided to not just deactivate the devices and instead just make them fall into the category of “unsupported hardware.” That means that the last 10.1 SDK OS update removed the kill switch on the Dev Alpha Testing Devices. As far as I know that last OS update for the Dev Alpha was not for the Dev Alpha A but you may have some enterprising people trying to get it to work to remove the kill switch.
Check out the details on the new quasi lease on life for the BlackBerry Dev Alpha line here. Kudos to BlackBerry for not just creating a bunch of bricks in developers hands.
