Porsche Design BlackBerry P’9981 Released in Gold – Is a BlackBerry Q10 Update Coming?

Porsche Design BlackBerry P'9981 gold

I have been wondering if BlackBerry would be continuing their relatively successful Porsche Design line with BlackBerry 10 and so far we have not heard anything. Oddly enough Porsche Design has released a new variant of the classic Porsche Design BlackBerry P’9981 this time coated in 24 carat gold on top of titanium and stainless steel casing. The back also has leather and a solid gold block with the model number. What’s even more interesting is that the gold version will only have 25 handsets made so I can only imagine the cost… Either way you can try to get one when it launches in June. Kudos to PocketLint for the details!

  1. The Porsche Design folks had a booth at BlackBerry Live, showing off the P’9981. This felt awkward and out of place, given that pretty much everything else is now full bore BB10. Seriously, who would actually want to buy a premium luxury model of an outdated phone at this stage? Fancy versions of a Z10 or Q10 would make a lot more sense.

  2. The Q5 kinda look like like it

    • It may be “old” already but many of the design elements of the Q10 (and even the Z10) were inspired by the P’9981:

First – the side-to-side glass on the P’9881 made it’s way first to the Z10 (it’s more obvious in black).

Next – the straight-across keys were at one time unique to this high end phone – Now even the Q10 emulates that.

It’s still a really interesting device – there are those that would prefer “vintage” over “modern” – think of the people that collect older pens for example.

  3. Yeah there are definitely some design elements there. Still I think they should updated it to the Q10

    • Agreed, if they are going to maket this as top of the line they need to update the OS to match thre current Q10.
