The Minimum OS Functionality BlackBerry Aimed For in BlackBerry 10

BlackBerry 10 performance

I found it fascinating when Thorsten Heins was on stage talking about how they built BlackBerry 10 for mobile computing. One of the things they shared was the minimum performance specs they wanted to see from BlackBerry 10. They stated they wanted to be able to run all of this on one device without any slowdowns:

  • 20 active applications
  • 8 homescreen tiles
  • 12 browser tabs
  • and more

All without slowing the device down. I can attest to the browser tabs and tiles not being an issue but I am waiting for headless apps for the 20 active apps. That is amazing compared to the older legacy BlackBerry devices.

  1. However, there are still slowdowns akin to what can be seen on Android, especially when in the hub. So, some background processes must still somehow be coupled to the GUI or overloading the CPU.

  2. Yeah they have some hub optimizations coming along that should speed that stuff up

  3. That may be so but that random reboot problem sucks bad! Not to mention when you sideload apps it REALLY slows down your device.
