BlackBerry Acknowledges Duplicate Gmail Contacts Issue With Workaround and Upcoming Fix

Cat Cat - Copy

I have never had duplicate contacts on my BlackBerry Z10 even with my 3 Gmail accounts but I am hearing reports of users running into the issue. It seems like users with older OS versions are sometimes seeing duplicate contacts in their address book even though the contact is only shown once in Gmail on the web. BlackBerry has confirmed the issue with knowledge base article KB34047 and has also offered a workaround. The workaround simply has you removing your Gmail contacts sync and adding it back. Here is how to do that:

Remove Gmail Contacts

  1. Swipe down from the top bezel
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select Accounts
  4. Select Gmail Contacts
  5. Select Delete

Re-add Gmail Contacts

  1. Select Add Account at bottom of Accounts screen
  2. Select Email, Calendar and Contacts
  3. Enter Gmail email address
  4. Enter password
  5. Set Sync Email to Off
  6. Set sync Calendar to off
  7. Ensure Sync Contacts is On
  8. Select Done

BlackBerry has also confirmed that a fix is coming but as usual has not committed to a time frame.

  1. Happened to me and the above procedure works perfectly

  2. Your cat looks mad Ronen.

  3. Sadly that workaround is useless, give it a couple of hours, days.. the contacts will duplicate, triplicate, etc again.

Btw I am using the latest os version..

Just hope they solve this once for all as soon as possible, as having over 1000 contacts is not nice at all.

    • yeah you are right. Mine went back to duplicate as well.

I don’t believe this is a BlackBerry OS issue. Its Google’s fault.

  4. BB should be more like Apple and when this sort of stuff happens just call it a “Feature”. “Contact Redundancy, incase you accidentally delete a contact, you already have a backup copy!” Genius!

  5. I don’t use Gmail or even have a Gmail account but I have up to 8 duplicates of some contacts on my Z10. Clearly this is a Blackberry issue. This and the fact there is still no two way USB sync makes the phone less useful to me than my old Pearl was. Before anyone jumps on the, “use the cloud” wagon, many firms in the financial sector still use wired connections.

  6. I wiped clean my BlackBerry 10 and only setup my 3 Gmail accounts and Yahoo account. I totally ignored Facebook, LinkedIn, twitter and foursquare.

Because I want my contacts only from Gmail – I only setup email accounts – and no duplicate contacts.

I strongly suspected that turning off Facebook, LinkedIn, twitter and foursquare contacts from contact setting is not working.

I hope they fix this. It has been 2 weeks without duplicate contacts. I am happy.
