BlackBerry Exec Reportedly Pegs Possible BlackBerry 10 PlayBook Launch Before June

PlayBook-deconstructed

We have been hearing rumors that BlackBerry 10 is coming to the PlayBook in the next few months. Now Mike Al Mefleh, director of product management at BlackBerry, confirmed to Emirates24|7 (via N4BB) that we may see it as early as next quarter. Specifically he said that:

“We have a very clear road map. The company will launch six additional new devices in 2013,” said Al Mefleh and added that the PlayBook will be in addition to these six new devices.

I think they got a little ahead of themselves saying that this confirms a 10” BlackBerry PlayBook but it does give us a bit of a timeline for BlackBerry 10 on the PlayBook. There are quite a few users waiting for the update but hopefully we will see BlackBerry release a beta to developers first so they can get apps ready for it!

  1. Awesome! I think it’s great that all PlayBooks will be eligible for the BB10 upgrade. Its nice to see continued software support for hardware that isn’t the latest and greatest. I’m looking forward to seeing how all of the BB10 goodies are integrated into a larger screen.

  2. THANK YOU! That needed to be said so PlayBook users and potential buyers aren’t left hanging.

  3. This is good news – at least good to know they haven’t gone back on their word.
But I wish it were sooner. I think a lot of portions of the Playbook OS are as yet not developed to the extent that one would expect from BlackBerry (such as email management and sound profiles) and I’m hoping the Playbook OS 10 would address most of those.

  4. I’ll get one as long as it has its own 3G or LTE connection

  5. That would be nice if BLACKBERRY would make a water resist phone. There is a big demand for water resist phones out there. I work outside everyday “bought 3 BlackBerry in last 3 years because of water damage” and I won’t buy nothing but BLACKBERRY. I bought the Z10 for my son and he loves it. If U guys at BLACKBERRY reading this, Please make it a little bit smalller than Z10 and name it ZC “Z Contractor” or ZW “Z Water Resist”.

  6. Sure BB10 on PB can be viewed as an experiment, but the longer vision must include tablets. Phones are great, but perhaps BB may want folks to sync their BB10s to some other platform far into the future. What about screen space for certain high performance apps? Yes, there is HDMI out, but there is still room for a device for real estate agents, teachers, students, doctors, pilots, etc. BlackBerry should not limit the market for BB10 too much.
