Netflix Supposedly Has No Plans for BlackBerry 10 App

Since the PlayBook launched we have been hearing users asking for Netflix on BlackBerry. There has been very little movement on that front for ages though people have had some success porting it to the Android player recently. This week AllThingsD is reporting that Netflix has confirmed that “We have no current plans for a BlackBerry app.” Who knows what that would mean in the future but that definitely means no luck at launch.

Here is what BlackBerry had to say about the news:

“We’re committed to bringing top titles from around the globe to BlackBerry 10 customers,” BlackBerry spokesman Alex Kinsella told AllThingsD. “At this time, it’s in Netflix’s court to join the excitement around BlackBerry 10 — we hope they choose to bring a BlackBerry 10 experience to their customers. We’d love to have them.”

Personally I don’t use Netflix at all so this makes no difference to me but I know some people who are die hard Netflix users.

  1. From what I’ve read Netflix doesn’t think building a BB10 client would bring them new customers, so I’m not surprised. Then again, Netflix biggest user base is probably USA and we still know not when USA carriers will release, so this is one of those chicken vs egg scenarios. I haven’t seen that Netflix said “never” though…

    • It is true that it may not gain them new customers but if blackberry users cancel their accounts then they sure would loose some. I canceled mine today and won’t get it back until they support blackberry

  2. Why doesn’t BlackBerry make the app themselves? Or does Netflix not allow 3rd party produced apps that “appear official”? Flix works, but Netflix hasn’t shut that app down… Seems to me that BlackBerry should be able to get an aggreement with Netflix to build the app on behalf of Netflix for sake BlackBerry users…

  3. I would think with Blackberry’s still formidible base – 80 million and growing, that Netflix would want to add them to their consumer base not alienate them. I was wondering, does anyone know how the Hulu app thing is going?

  4. By the time they figure out that they should’ve, blackberry would have developed the porting support for 4.1 and it would be a piece of cake for them afterwards.

  5. I have 2 things to say to anyone who wants Netflix to do whats right and give blackberry the users the same respect as people on every other major platform. 1) Cancel your netflix account and tell them that it is because they do not support blackberry and you won’t be back until they do support it. 2) go to and sign the two petitions that are there to convince Netflix to support blackberry. Just do a search, they are easy to find. Netflix will change if they find there is a real demand and a downside to not supporting Blackberry.

    • Can’t hurt to sign an online petition I guess. Clearly Netflix doesn’t see BlackBerry as being (as you put it) a “major platform”. BlackBerry ownership has been plummeting in Netflix major subscriber base areas and we just don’t know (nor does Netflix) that BB10 is going to reverse that trend. I’m confident though that IF BB10 is a big hit in the USA, there WILL be a native client for Netflix and a LOT of other services.

  6. Netflix in Canada is lame. Only old titles and limited. I had it on my PC and then cancelled my subscription. The video store on BB10 has better and more up to date videos/movies/shows than Netflix in Canada.

    • That’s probably very true, but I don’t think the BB10 BlackBerry World video store allows streaming as a subscription to all available content. But then again I don’t have a BB10 device yet…

      • True no streaming of all contents but if you purchase a video or a TV episode you can download it to 5 devices. For example, Skyfall is available for $19.99 and I can download that to my PB, Phone, Computer and share it with somebody else on their BB10 so it’s still cheap and maybe even cheaper then Netflix especially if you get to keep the movie/show.

    • Oh yeah I totally forgot about that video store, people will forget about their Netflix and become all blackberry world from that point on, good point.

  7. It’s their funeral…

  8. Netflix should think things over, there’s already a movement on the BlackBerry nation about a massive subscription cancellation of BB users who already have Netflix accounts. there are already about 8,000 BB nation members who are also netflix member’s \willing to cancel their account if no Netflix comes to BB10
