After an interesting conversation with @alexkinsella today I posted a tongue in cheek tweet about how the “BlackBerry Z10 camera really sucks when I’m taking photos in pitch black conditions with no flash. Where’s the night vision?” I got some humorous replies but I was stunned by what @bahandi shared. He let me know about a recent low light impromptu photo shoot photographer Jt White performed with his BlackBerry Z10.
Jt heard rumors that the BlackBerry Z10 “camera is shit” and “terrible in low light” and as a Canadian decided to test those statements for himself. He chose the Toronto Metro which is known for its sub-optimal light. His conclusion? I don’t want to ruin it for you but a picture is truly worth a thousand words. You really have to check out the results for yourself and when done read up on metering.
OK maybe I will ruin it just a little with his conclusion:
After a day or so with the Blackberry Z10 I can honestly say I dig it. Give me some apps and it’s the first phone I could realistically see taking the place of the iPhone as my mobile shooter.
The best part? This is just the first iteration of BlackBerry 10’s camera.

But how difficult is it to alter the metering when you want to take that random shot at a party?
I can’t wait for the Aristo and it’s 13MP Sony Exmor RS CMOS sensor

I thought the Aristo was getting the same 8 MP camera as the current Z10. You know something I don’t.

Nope, I don’t, but the Aristo is DOA if it comes with the same module. That’s one of the components that BB needs to work on if they want to stand a chance against what’s coming from Sony, HTC, Nokia, Apple, etc.
The Aristo needs to be high-end, not another mid-tier device.

Agreed, but megapixels alone won’t make a good camera. The quality of the lens and the sensitivity of the sensor matters just as much or more, but those aren’t reflected in the “benchmark” number of megapixels.
The next all-touch BlackBerry 10 phone must be even more awesome than the Z10.

The Optimus G proved that once again
, but Sony sells full packages, including a quality, f2.2 lens.
Let’s wait and see.

You probably use the party picture mode.

I’m intrigued by this mode as well. Is it something the reviewers missed?

Of course, the f/2.2 aperture on the Z10 should surely shine in low light shots, so I was surprised to hear the reviews from other blog sites.

The pictures are nice, not because of the camera per se, but the photographer as well.
Composition and timing is a lot…a good camera just augments that.

Yup but the fact is that the camera is not hopeless like some sites have been trying to suggest. Its actually quite good and only getting better in later builds.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with you on this.
Ever seen that geek that’s trying to look cool and everybody is picking on him because they know he IS? “finally”
Catch my drift…
