A few BES admins let me know that BlackBerry has kept their promise to continue maintaining BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Java devices. BlackBerry has just released maintenance release 2 for BES 5.0.4 which packs in two huge support updates. BES 5.0.4 now supports the latest Stand-Alone Microsoft Exchange 2013 (E15) and Microsoft Windows Server 2012. They have also added support for Microsoft Lync 2013 for Enterprise Instant Messaging. The new maintinance release 2 is available for Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Domino, & Novell Groupwise from the downloads I see available.
