RIM’s latest native SDK update for BlackBerry 10 included MapView for Cascades but only developers really got a look at it. Thankfully Shadid at RIM created a video of RIM’s CustomMapView sample that makes use of the integrated BlackBerry Maps MapView. It allows you to view the 2D maps while rotating the device to move the maps. This is the groundwork for a sort of augmented reality type of app using RIM’s maps.
Check out the details here or the video below:

Looks like RIM won’t make the same mistake that apple made with their maps.

What makes you say that? We can’t see much on that video except controls over a vector plane.
- We have no idea how precise and accurate the maps will be (current BB version sucks for pedestrians).
- There probably won’t be Streetview unless they license it from Nokia, but it’s doubtful.
- I doubt we’ll have indoor (buildings) maps
So it probably won’t be as bad as Apple’s solution for drivers and possibly public transports commuters, but nothing compares to Google Maps atm.

The speed, the fluid motion, the response…that is so not the old Blackberry…
RIM, you are doing something right this time…this is your chance.
