Microsoft Killing Off Windows Live Messenger In Favor of Skype on March 15th

WLM retired

Microsoft has made the inevitable announcement of retiring Windows Live Messenger this week. (via The Verge) They announced that they will be killing off the service on March 15th in favor of their recently acquired Skype service. It will be retired globally except for China though I am not sure if they will keep the service running for others or just no longer offering clients. Either way it looks like Skype is Microsoft’s future. I just hope that it makes its way onto BlackBerry 10 close to launch!

BTW does anyone still use Windows Live Messenger? The only person I know still on it uses it because they have a Microsoft Collaboration server in their company that uses it.

  1. This was inevitable. Skype was just better! I’m betting Skype will be on BB10 at launch :D

    • Skype just better? what planet are you from. Skype does phone and video commutation great. It is horrible with text.

The servers often delay or fail to send your message, timestamps fail to work correctly at times, not having multiple windows? Forcing everything in a recent tab?

They should have kept the layout of windows live messanger but had the back bone, from video and phone, using skype.

  2. Proof? There is a Skype ID in BB10 contacts but that doesn’t mean there will be Skype.

  3. Never used it once. MS needs a Skype app for BB10, sounds like its not coming though.

  4. Not being mean, but haven’t known a user of MSN chat since 2000, when I moved my mom from it off to another service.

  5. I use it all the time with a friend but now we both moved to Skype. I don’t know what will happen to Messenger App on Blackberry Bold 9900
