Some of the more technically minded BlackBerry fans may know that the PlayBook is currently running the QNX microkernel under the hood. Specifically it is running QNX Neutrino 6.5 SP1 which was repurposed for mobile devices when RIM acquired QNX. Nerdberry noticed something interesting in the developer documentation for the native SDK for BlackBerry 10. In there RIM added a new entry for “What’s new in QNX Neutrino 8.0.0” in the audio section. There is nothing crazy new there though it does look out of place or mistakenly included. This is the sort of thing that starts conspiracy theories…

To add a little fuel to the rumor that QNX 8 is coming @QNX_Linda responded to @dasDestruktion in September hinting that RIM is working on QNX 8…

What is means is that RIM is creating a universal version of Neutrino that can take on multiple personalities and identities based on the application. Of course, RIM will continue to support existing QNX clientele, but the new platform is being built around a mobile computing philosophy that extends from the PlayBook to handhelds like the BB10 devices.
This move to unify their Neutrino offerings will streamline RIM’s efforts to create a strong presence in the mobile computing market and to bring other products to market that will be based on the same platform. Neutrino’s amazing scalability makes this dream a reality.
Let’s not also forget that Neutrino is the only real time OS (RTOS) in the mobile computing market. It will be interesting to see if RIM turns this feature on in BB10!
