We have known for awhile now that an update to PlayBook OS 2.1 is coming very soon but now RIM has come out and confirmed it themselves. In their announcement for the updated BlackBerry Mobile Fusion Service Pack 1 they noted that “Updates for BlackBerry Device Service that involve functionality for managing BlackBerry PlayBook tablets will become functional after the upcoming release of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1.” Rumors have been swirling of this OS dropping any day now and hopefully it is sooner rather than later. So what are you waiting for? Continue hitting that “Check for Updates” button and report back immediately when you see an update.
Thanks Phil for pointing out that I glossed over this!
PS: Let me know if you find the original source for this picture so I can credit them. It never fails to entertain me.

Pic is a keeper! Where the heck did you find this one?
It’s been 3-4 months since I’ve been waiting for 2.1 to be released. I first thought April, so it will be interesting to see what new goodies RIM has drummed up. My beta is slow but I expect that.

This is what pisses me off.
CrackBerry HAD to be first to announce this, then pass it off as “oh RIM always changes their releases last minute”. If I don’t read something FORMAL from RIM promising this, for it not to arrive isn’t their fault. It’s the fault of the idiots and self-proclaimed prophets who “share” this information with us.
I’m excited none the less, but I won’t be heartbroken if this isn’t entirely accurate.

so when then?
JamAmerica should be a interesting venue for showing this to the public.

Ronen,
Any word if 2.1 will be able to run Cascades?
Also, any word on a BB10 beta for the Playbook a kin to the Dev Alpha?

Completely agree joski. You seem to be one of the few that get it. Seems they didn’t want to get scooped by some italian site but ended up getting scooped by berryreview. 2.1 is going to give us stuff no other tablet has so I don’t know where the entitlement comes from.

Stuff I love about 2.1.0.840 (beta):
- android apps run like any other app their own window
- android apps appear to launch faster
- portrait modes for mail, calendar, tasks, contacts
- improved html5 support in browser
RIM should license Files & Folders for the PlayBook
Sick cloud connected app for sharing and collaborating. The PlayBook needs more cloud connected software built in.

I’m not really sure if browser is actually better in 2.1 beta. It’s jittery while scrolling in some websites where it’s PERFECTLY smooth even with flash on same website with official 2.0.1. I loved that android apps launch much quicker and they run in separate windows, but the browser is killing the experience. At least for me because I’m ALL about buttery smoothness.

Often in beta code, debug code is turned on to troubleshoot bugs but often cause slight delays and some lag. I imagine once the code is official, you should see some performance improvements over the beta.
Certainly, html5test.com reports OS 2.1 at 393 versus 373 for OS 2.0, so there has been some noteworthy enhancements to HTML5 code in OS 2.1.

Nice! I’m not seeing it, but I’m running the 2.1 beta. Did you get it loaded up?

I did check in the check for update area and it said that there was an update so I went ahead and did it, nothing mayor happened though, at least not like the one before that changed few things in the overall look of it…

I heard it was a small 1MB maintenance update rather than a full OS.
