RIM Lays Out BlackBerry 10 SDK Roadmap & Promises More Details!

Flight Board

RIM keeps on piling on the gifts to developers today. Tim Neil just took to the BlackBerry DevBlog and games a high level overview of the upcoming SDK updates coming to the BlackBerry 10 SDKs. What is truly crazy and something I very much look forward to is that Tim is promising transparency about upcoming SDK updates. Tim clearly states this is something he has rarely seen any tech company do in this industry but he is promising top level line item deliverables for every SDK release. That means we will not be getting the nitty gritty but more the milestones and roadmaps.

Tim said these roadmaps should be coming in the form of a flight arrival board and its scheduled arrival time and status. He makes the usual disclaimers about software delivery being targets and not deadlines but he promises these roadmaps should be available in a “couple of weeks.” So far he has shared this high level update schedule for the BlackBerry 10 SDK Betas:

  • R4: May SDK Beta Release (first beta)
  • R6: July SDK Beta Release (just launched) (We are here as of today)
  • R8: September SDK Beta Release (API Freeze, Binary Compatible with Gold)
  • R9: October SDK Beta Release (bug fixes)
  • R10: November Gold SDK Release (bug fixes)

That means September will be the big API freeze right around BlackBerry DevCon. Check out all the rest of the details on the BlackBerry DevBlog. I will definitely be following this one closely.

  1. Jesus christ, if only RIM had a god damn BB10 phone on the market!!!! LOVE this developer relations team. They are gonna have to get creative to keep this momentum going for another 6 months

  2. what is an API freeze?

  3. I’m glad they’re finally going to publish those roadmaps. As devs, we need to know what is going to be available at launch so as to avoid the PlayBook fiasco where so many components are still missing today.
