Another Patent Troll Hits RIM With Lawsuit

Innovative Pager

I am not sure what it is recently but it seems like the whole tech industry has been subjected to parasitic patent trolls. The latest in line is Mobile Telecommunications Technologies who has sued RIM using their acquired portfolio of former SkyTel Communications patents including five patents. Here is how TheStar describes the patents in question registered between 1996-1999:

The patents cover several software functions including those that store and resend undelivered data messages, that handle call back numbers, and which allow a server to process extra-large emails. MTEL also says the BlackBerry calendar infringes a patent that covers prewritten messages.

I really want to see that patent for allowing servers to process extra large emails from pre 1999. Its almost like being sued for patent infringement is proof that you are doing things the right way. Anyone want to take bets on how this one plays out? I wonder where SkyTel and Mobile Telecommun ications have been sleeping for the last 12+ years.
