BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1.0 Beta for Developers Now Available

PlayBook OS

Devs (And users) can now get in on the PlayBook OS 2.1.0 fun with a public beta of the OS. This OS rockets the WebKit browser further with a 391 score on HTML5Test. On top of that there are loads of basic improvements like portrait support for email, calendar, and contacts. RIM has also added improved folder support including IMAP folder support in email. RIM has also updated the android runtime to v2.1.0 with each Android app running in its own window along with payment API and Camera API access.

There are more OS 2.1 updates coming with the commercial release along with new Android SDK v2.1 coming then. RIM also said that the 2.1 Native SDK is coming next week with an updated Adobe AIR SDK coming shortly thereafter.

You must Whitelist your device to receive the beta here. Keep in mind this is a beta intended for developers and not end users. More details here. Thanks Tashanna, Brian, and Frank for sending this one in!

PS: Anyone else loving that RIM is finally hitting their deadlines?

  1. I’m having trouble registering my PlayBook PIN. It’s saying “Invalid PIN” although this worked fine for the previous beta.

    Anyone else?

  2. it took my PIN but no update yet on the PB… i have not read anywhere yet of anyone getting the update through

  3. Think ill wait for final release. Don’t won’t to lose my ported apps.

  4. I didn’t lose my kindle ported app and everything I have on here works as well. Hopefully we get a mobile fusion update and the wireless activation for the pb soon :). I’m evaluating mdm servers and I’d like to support blackberry.

  5. I like the Blackberry smartphone beta OSes not the Playbook, left a bitter taste in my mouth the first time I tried it since I couldn’t appreciate it.

  6. 393+10Bonus on the test

  7. Works fine, portrait mode, also separed runner for android apps is cool ! All sideloaded apps stays untouched, and they work fine. Camera also finaly works, you can try it in Barcode scanner. Lets hope, someone will develop an app for video chat. Ops.. let me try Ovo..ill be back

  8. Portrait mode is definitely a welcomed improvement. No more stretchy stretchy the fingers.

The PNG screenshot change is like chalk and cheese better, as expected from PNG clarity and quality. Will pep up the documentation.

  9. Any known applications/games that don’t work or don’t work right?

    • Lots of things are buggy, from native email to browser. Did I mention the browser, crashes plenty. Led and tones are not consistent from before. Wait lets go back to the browser, at times I cannot swipe down for the tabs, have to click the tabs button. I have to reboot at least two or three times a week.

      • browser hasn’t crashed once for me and I haven’t HAD to reboot once

        weird how experience vary

        • The browser now also cannot handle redirections, it just halts on the page that states “Object has been moved here” where here is hyperlinked. It also has reverted to an old 1.0 issue where web page files are downloaded eg. The html, php, etc. Instead of serving them as page content.

  10. With havin so much written content do you ever
run into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation?

My blog has a lot of unique content I’ve either written myself or outsourced but it appears a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my agreement. Do you know any techniques to help protect against content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.
