RIM Rumored to Layoff 2,000 Employees By June 2nd

Thorsten Heins and his team have hinted for awhile now that they have been analyzing the RIM organization and streamlining it. Sadly this means that many people responsible for the devices we love will be shown the door if they do not fit into Thorsten’s view for BlackBerry 10. RIM currently has about 16,500 employees and the Globe and Mail is reporting that RIM plans on laying off 2,000 or so of that global workforce before their release their Q1 results on June 2nd. It makes sense and is a sign that Heins is cleaning up shop so he can take the write down this quarter before BlackBerry 10 launches but it still sucks for those who will not be around to release BlackBerry 10 and mount RIM’s comeback.

  1. Tuff nuget to swallow but I think as RIM moves to the new platform, people working in the OS 6 and 7 departments have less and less to do. RIM is probably a bit bloated with all the acquisitions also.

  2. is reporting 5000 now.
