We have received quite a few complaints from readers that Dictionary.com has updated their very popular free dictionary app to v2.0. This new “upgrade” turned the really nice BlackBerry smartphone app into nothing more than a homescreen website shortcut. They now even call it the Dictionary.com Web Launcher and it is getting hammered in the reviews on App World.
Rroyy was kind enough to score the previous v1.4 and offered it up for download here at http://rroyy.com/dictionary. The UI does not work well on newer BlackBerry 7 devices but users with older devices will appreciate it.

Very good. You are very right, the older version of the dictionary was better. And I was just so glad that I could downgrade. Thanks

I wrote to dictionary.com practically in tears once I realized what a pita the web launcher was, this is their response:
“After reviewing previous feedback and requests from BlackBerry users, we decided to transition our BlackBerry App to the new Dictionary.com BlackBerry Web Launcher in order to support all BlackBerry devices. To address your concern specifically, I would like to apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced with this change. We made every effort to ensure that the new Launcher will still provide you with access to the content and features you have come to love.
While we no longer offer a standalone Dictionary.com BlackBerry app and it is no longer available for download, I hope that you can explore and enjoy the new, increased functionality that you now have with the Dictionary.com BlackBerry Web Launcher…”
It goes on to list all the things you can do at the site and various stats about number of words available, etc. Basically it was a nice way of saying we were screwed, lol, UNTIL I found this site and that wonderful article and link.
I downloaded and ran it with no problems at all, it’s the same I remembered and love.
Thank you Rroyy!!!
