I would have never thought of RIM first when it came to patent lawsuits over music playlists. GigaOm got word that a shell company, Point Ventures of Seattle (aka the patent troll), has chosen to sue RIM of all people. This lawsuit is over Point Ventures wildly innovative “System and method for musical playlist selection in a portable audio device”
You can read the whole patent here (US Patent 7667123) but essentially Point Ventures thinks it has a validly awarded patent on creating an audio playlist on any device with song titles created on the device or built out of a search and editing them. Sound like every music player? You got it!
Anyone want to take a gentleman’s bet on how this one plays out?

I have a patent on EVERYTHING… pay up bitches!!!
On a more serious note, something needs to be done about this sh_t.. it is getting ridiculous. I want RIM focusing on devices and software not on beating back patent trolls..
