Past 3 Months Show Large Increase in BlackBerry PlayBook users

Based on data derived from monthly downloads of my free game Pixelated, I have estimated the number of PlayBooks sold each month. The graph shows the cumulative totals of these estimates.

Of note is the slope of the graph over the past few months. The past three months, which correspond with RIM’s most recent (and not yet reported) financial quarter show a dramatic increase in the number of PlayBooks in the wild. According to these estimates the total number of PlayBooks sold has doubled in the past three months. As of the end of November RIM had shipped 800k devices. Given how lean inventory was at that time, I think that it is possible that RIM will be able to announce 1M PlayBooks shipped over the past three months.

I think that it is safe to assume that most of the increased interest is due to the PlayBook’s reduction in price to $200, although I am sure that Christmas helped as well.

  1. I bought a Playbook for my mom and sister for their birthdays. For $200 what the heck!

    • Hi kevin,

Ty from RIM here. Nice work outfitting your family with the PlayBook. If your mom and sister need help getting the most from their PlayBook, or if you’d like a refresher, check out this interactive guide that explores some how-to demos for PlayBook 2.0: http://bbry.lv/xnf8up.

  2. -2 here. Never downloaded pixelated for both my playbooks. Actually I don’t know anyone who’s downloaded it.

  3. My daughter loves you, Eric! Pixelated is one of her fav games on the PlayBook!

It would be interesting to see if they have surpassed the 1.5M mark yet. Based on your figures of 800K shipped by end of Nov, and with the short supply, I’m sure they’re probably approaching 2M units sold (not just shipped).

Wish you had put numbers on the Y axis :)

I’d love to see more native PlayBook apps, but I respect those who ported over Android apps to help fill the void. Now, if only Skype would be ported over! :)
