RIM Awarded Patent for Pattern Tap to Unlock

 RIM Lock Unlock Patent

RIM was just awarded a patent for their “System and method for locking and unlocking access to an electronic device” that they applied for back in 2006. Engadget spotted the fact that the patent was just approved this week. The patent describes users tapping a pattern on a device to unlock or lock the device or allow access to a specific application. The patent takes things a step further by having you tap in a pattern and also take into account accelerometer data along with how hard of a tap you make so others watching you cannot easily see the combination.

Check out the full patent for yourself here. Personally I love the current unlock method on the BlackBerry PlayBook where you just swipe from one bezel to another. On the other hand it is not the most secure and still requires a password if you have one set…

  1. I can’t wait till they implement this. I want to see it action to see exctly how it looks and works.

  2. I wonder if this pattern lock app will also include the customizable widgets that were shown before.
