Free MapSearch Version Offers Basic Google Maps for PlayBook Users

MapSearch

One of the things missing on my PlayBook is a solid GPS app that compares to BlackBerry or Google Maps on my smartphone. Sandsoft has been working on a stopgap solution for now that works relatively well based on Google Maps V3 JavaScript API but until now you had to pay $2.99 for a pro version. Kiran from Sandsoft let us know that they have released a free version of MapSearch to fill in that gap. The free version includes many of the features of the pro version except for things like driving directions and places search.

Hopefully RIM is working on bringing BlackBerry, Google, or Bing maps to the PlayBook natively. Until then you can check out the free version of MapSearch here in App World.

  1. What is the advantage of this over the Bing Maps that is on the PB now? I just did a comparison from a performance point of view and the Bing app performs way better, panning and zooming is much smoother on Bing. The Bing map has some decent features and while is is not as good as a native app, it is respectable.

  2. or even over MapApps… based on Google and installed by default…

  3. As long as RIM doesn’t work with Google. Any apps based on their libraries is going to suck.
Performance is a joke compared to what the hardware is capable of doing.
The saddest part is that Bing’s API is nowhere near as feature complete as the Google one, so apps developer have to choose between acceptable speed, but ugly and limited AND and sluggish, but pretty and useful.

  4. I think Google Maps offer more in the transit and bike trail stuff. We use it extensively for biking as it shows all the trails in our area. For now Bing doesn’t have that. I would like to either GMaps come to the PB correctly or Bing Maps to do transit and trails.
