BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Launching Publicly on February 21st (after Presidents Day)

PlayBook 2.0

We told you last month that the PlayBook OS 2.0 was launching on February 17th but it looks like regular users will have to wait a tad longer. I have been hearing both the 17th and 21st dates for almost a month now from sources and more of them are pointing towards a February 21st launch date which is also what Lucas @N4BB is hearing. As far as we have been able to piece together the February 17th date was a peg on the calendar that RIM set in October of last year. That date never made sense to me since it is a Friday which would mean that RIM support would be very thin for the biggest PlayBook OS update since the device launch but RIM has never been predictable.

That led to the next possible launch date which was the 20th. As many of you know the 20th is a national holiday in the US, Presidents Day, which means that many of RIM’s largest customers and support personnel would once again be unavailable. That seems to be the reason RIM has decided to aim towards February 21st for this huge launch since February 17th would leave them with 3 days of limited support.

I hope you all have a fun Tuesday planned with loads of “Check for Updates” button mashing! This is still not in any way a publicly confirmed launch date from RIM but many of you have been asking us for the latest update.

  1. oh so close

  2. I didn’t think the 17th made any sense. I figured either the 21st or the 27th would be more likely. I think the 27th will be when they will announce a whole slew of big names apps – hopefully including Netflix and Skype.

  3. hope d 17th. they dont need that much support if deployment is done right.

  4. Seriously looking forward to this. Hopefully the 2.0 update coupled with the huge response to the developer giveaway will be the boost the PlayBook has so desperately needed. I still believe the PlayBook is the most underrated tablet out there.

  5. Would have been nice to have for the long weekend but I get that the 21st makes sense. I’m sure RIM wants to make sure everyone hears about it also, people taking a longer weekend could miss the news.

  6. 20th is family day in ontario as well (where RIM’s headquarters are)

  7. Nice! I hope they are prepared because I suppose it will be a update tsunami to their servers! We saw this happening before with Apple when they release their iOS 5 so I hope RIM doesn’t make the same mistake. On the other hand, there aren’t nearly as much Playbooks around than iPhones …

Well, I’m definitely looking forward to a good update experience!

  8. i can’t wait anymore…..
