RIM Employee Porting Wikipedia Mobile to the BlackBerry PlayBook

Wikimedia PlayBook

One of RIM’s employees that they gained from their TinyHippos acquisition, @gordtanner, is working on a fun project. The Wikipedia app for Android was built by the Wikimedia crew and in two weeks hit over 350k installs on Android with a 4.5+ star rating in two weeks. It was built in PhoneGap and opensourced which is where Gord comes in. He decided to take the app and port it for the BlackBerry PlayBook. He ran into a small rendering issue in Ripple which he logged for fixing and then created the Wikimedia app for the PlayBook.

Gord is currently working on working his code into the Wikipedia Mobile main branch and releasing it on App World. Hopefully he gets cracking soon! You can check out his progress in his post about the porting process.

  1. This really good stuff. RIM’s comeback will be a trickle of these kinds of stories, turning into river….

RIM will need to get all of their developer tools together, functional, easy to use, and have a few (major) key success stories that make other developers sit up, take notice and go “…Hhmmmm, I wonder if….”

  2. I need it. ha ha

  3. This is so awesome can’t wait to get this. Great job Gord!
