We have mentioned a few ePub ebook readers for the PlayBook since it launched but PlayEPub is one of the top contenders. It offers up a pretty solid feature set including what they call “real book-like pagination” if that is important to you. It can read any non-DRM protected ePub book and should be able to handle most.
You can find PlayEPub in App World for $1.99 below. It is under constant development and you can see the latest updates below:
v.1.6.170
- New menu option to set landscape mode on one or two columns. Suggested by many people on Twitter, Facebook and email.
- Added help button on reading mode.
- Solved issue with italic font, reported by Dave Croal via web
- Solved issue rotating from landscape to portrait mode reported by Adrian via web.
v.1.6.160
- New menu option to set clock to 24H/12H format
- New menu option to enable or disable Playbook default standby mode when reading
- Solved some issues when opening books with bad uuid
- Delete bookmarks from window
- Check font colors to any element on night mode
v.1.6.152
- New feature: highlight text on bookmarks and notes. Now, when adding a bookmark or a note, selected text will be highlighted when reading. This feature works only for new bookmarks and notes, old ones will not highlight text.
- Improved bookmarks and notes system. It has more accuracy now going to linked page. This new system works only for new bookmarks and notes, existing ones will work as usual.
- Solved a bug moving selection end to last char of a paragraph, it can be selected now.
- Solved a bug deleting notes
- Solved issue when going to a bookmark or note inside the same chapter you are reading.
- Added welcome and what’s new screens.
v.1.6.130
- Improved reading options, book own styles are shown by default increasing appearance.
- New menu option to deactivate book styles and use generic ones.
- Improved file browser with copy/paste/del/rename/unzip options
- Improved UI on main screen, colors, spaces…
- Solved issue with page chapter hidden on night mode, reported by Gossieur on Twitter
- Font family is now defined per book.
- Minor bugs solved

This is currently my go-to e-reading app. Anyone done a side-by-side comparison with Book Reader?

I have been using Book Reader for awhile now but both seem pretty solid. They each have a sort of different spread of features.

This is definitely the best reader for the PlayBook and it keeps getting better!

This is also my #1 ereader app, however I haven’t done any comparisons with anything except kobo. My biggest gripe about this app was that it froze if the screen changed orientation but now that it’s fixed I love it!

Our library is about to start digital book loans. Anyone know the format that libraries use or does it vary from place to place? Seeing this made me think about that

I dont know if this is standard or not but the Calgary Public library carries E-books in Adobe EPub, Adobe PDF, and Mobipocket eBooks.

I really like the Book Reader app. Constant updates for enhancements/bug fixes. But I’m tempted to try this one to see how it works.

I have a question. I downloaded playEpub and tried to highlight text, however, I don’t know have to save it. I want to be able to open the book later and review what I’ve highlighted.
Can someone help me out?
Thanks,
Alfie

for real, this must be a free application. samsung galaxy tab can read any format of ebook and take note it’s free! and besides, bb playbook is just limited when it comes to its application and it is a pain in the ass… so why bother to make it hard for the consumer…. this must be free, PRONTO! lol
