RIM Shows Off Some Future USB Accessory Tinkering on the PlayBook

PlayBook USB Prototyping PlayBook USB Prototyping 2

I am not sure what took RIM months since DevCon to post up this video but its worth mentioning. Mathias and Fredrik from The Astonishing Tribe were showing off a Arduino platform board hooked up to a PlayBook over USB (it looks like its getting power that way too). RIM is showing this off as the PlayBook being perfect for tinkerers and prototypers but I know there are a good number of developers who want low level access to hardware like the USB, Bluetooth, and more. Alec Saunders confirmed as much in our recent interview with him.

The question is when this sort of access will come to the PlayBook OS 2.0 beta so devs can prepare it for the OS 2.0 launch. Hopefully RIM hits the gas and keeps on pushing out significant updates. Check out the full details on RIM’s DevBlog or in the video below:

  1. RIMM needs to pump out these updates in a hurry!

  2. This kind of USB functionality is what I’ve been hoping and wanting from Rim. I hope it comes out with the 2.0 update!! 🙂

  3. It’s pretty darn cool. But now I’m waiting for someone to say that the PlayBook is hackable so a foreign country has installed the ADK, built a weapon of mass destruction, connected to the PlayBook, and is planning to take out the planet. And it will all be RIM’s fault. 🙂 Just saying! Probably see it on BGR next. lol.

  4. I want to see USB hosting activated so we can connect it to a dock that has HDMI, full size SD card slot and about 4 full sized USB ports, so that we can connect the PB to a big screen tv/monitor plus Keyboard and mouse. Practically a computer in its own. But seriously speaking…Can’t anyone make a Dock with USB (for syncing) and HDMI out at the very least? Everytime I connect it to a tv or monitor, I have to lay down my beautiful PlayBook!
